Royal Ulster Rifles in Eqypt 1921

Good Morning I am doing some research on my Grandfather's uncle, James Naughton. James joined the Royal Irish Rifles in 1908, saw action with the 1st Battalion and 2nd Battalion during World War one and later saw action in the Middle East with the now renamed Royal Ulster Rifles, when he was mentioned in Despatches in September 1921 ( not long before he died from Pneumonia at the Citadel hospital in Cairo). Could anyone throw some light on the Rifles time in Egypt?

The MiD of "Naughton, 7006371 Rfn. J., 2nd Bn" was added to the despatch of Lieutenant General J A L Haldane which appeared in the London Gazette No. 32379, 5th July 1921. This was in connection with operations of the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force and you should be able to access the LG for 5th July 1921 on line

Good luck

Michael

A BIG thanks for your reply Michael. I've since printed off the relevant London Gazettes and in one e-mail you've solved a mystery I have been puzzling over for months .- Why was he mentioned in Despatches? And we won't mention the hours spend doing research on what was going on in Eqypt at the time!  Still, he was quite an interesting character and I can now fill in a blank spot in my every expanding research on him.

Best regards,

Gerard
