Mark Hone Posted 3 July , 2016 Share Posted 3 July , 2016 I am currently trying to make sense of the rather confused fighting around Quadrangle Support Trench and Contalmaison on 7th July 1916 during which our old boy, 2/Lt Alec Smith of A Company, 10th Lancashire Fusiliers, was killed. 'The History of the LF 1914-18' records that at one point Lt Col Wade sent his reserve, A Company and elements of other units to reinforce a battalion of the Welsh Regiment that was holding on to the edge of Contalmaison. I am assuming that this was 9th Welsh Regiment of 58 Brigade, 19th Division. Unfortunately the usually very good LF History merely records the rather ambiguous phrase 'the attack was successful and A Company was withdrawn'. As it is likely that our old boy was killed in this part of the fighting I would like to flesh it out a bit more. Can anyone supply any information from the 9th Welsh side? As always any help would be much appreciated. Mark
