Penrose Posted 2 July , 2016 Share Posted 2 July , 2016 Unfortunately unable to upload this map.I have received various items from my late Grandfather who served in the RAMC in 1915. The map is hand drawn and coloured showing villages and woods in the area Friourt-Malmaison-Mametz and appears to be similar to grease proof paper. it is overprinted with red graticules with numbers to identify each segment. any ideas? Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 3 July , 2016 Share Posted 3 July , 2016 Hi, I think we'd all like to see the map. Unfortunately you can't post images on this site until you've posted 10 posts (I think, maybe it's 5??). So. Either reply to your own post 9 times (Just put the word 'reply' as the message each time). Or, if you have an account on Photobucket or Flickr, upload the image there, and then copy the link to that image, then paste it in another post here. John Milner Posted 3 July , 2016 Share Posted 3 July , 2016 The villages/woods are Fricourt, Contalmaison and Mametz trench map 57D SE 4 has all or parts of the locations. John
tootrock Posted 3 July , 2016 Share Posted 3 July , 2016 Could it be a body density map? Martin

Penrose Posted 3 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 3 July , 2016 Too trock...thank you for your input.i am now are what a body density chart depicts but with reference to my map I think that it t a BD chart. for example...Mametz wood shows numbers 18,13,24,29 which are very low for a body count. my thoughts are that the numbers are simply used to identify a specific section of the chart. still trying to produce the photo of sections of the map

tootrock Posted 3 July , 2016 Share Posted 3 July , 2016 Those are details copied from a typical printed trench map. Martin
Knotty Posted 3 July , 2016 Share Posted 3 July , 2016 (edited) Hi Penrose Martin just beat me to it, as he says a copy of a trench map. I would hazard a guess that as it has been hand drawn then it is a very unique/ rare item which cannot be reproduced, thank you for sharing. If you go to the Long Long Trail then search for trench maps there is a very good section on the composition make up and how to read one. Penrose Posted 3 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 3 July , 2016 Tootrock appreciate your very prompt reply. im wondering whether my late Grandfather had at some point created a map using grease proof " tracing paper" to identify locations he served in the RAMC
Robert Dunlop Posted 4 July , 2016 Share Posted 4 July , 2016 Thank you very much for posting the original. What a precious resource! It was not uncommon for tracings to be made from trench maps in order to add specific details. The purple hatched areas are not from original trench maps, at least as far as I know. Croonaert will know for sure though. I suspect they represent areas that were used by the RAMC in some way. There are specialists on the RAMC who will know for sure. Penrose Posted 4 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 4 July , 2016 https://www.flickr.com/photos/142080063@N07/shares/x64DW0 Gentlemen thank you for your informative replies.Attached to this post should be 5 photos. One showing the map in its entirety, one of items in a small box which contained the map,one of epaullettes which I would be interested to identify. In addition to Pip ,Squeak and Wilfred, the box contains a piece of torn material which has a medal hanging bar attached.....no words or inscriptions at all and apparently unconnected to the set of 3 medals. the maps dimensions are 72x29cm.2 blue lines run full width from square 5 at the left to squares 35&5 at the right. The upper blue line runs from Shamrock tree, through Acid Drop copse,North of Bazentin and North of High Wood. The lower blue line runs just South of Red Cottage in Fricourt,South of Railway Copse and South of Mametz wood. 2 shorter purple lines almost encircle Mametz wood. Some of the purple rectangles contain diagonal lines and some purple dots. Presumably the names of the Copses and locations were chosen by the Army as they do not appear to be French/ Belgian? By comparing the styles of letters I believe the map was hand drawn by my Grandfather during service with the RAMC.

Penrose Posted 4 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 4 July , 2016 Knotty thank you for your persistence with this issue. the 4 links I have attached on posts #30/31 all have different ID numbers and seem to work when I click on them. i presume the protocols of this forum prevent me emailing the photos directly to you....assuming I had your address. Is there a mechanism in this forum to post private messages? rgds
Penrose Posted 4 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 4 July , 2016 TEW thank you for your input. do Flickr accounts not require all users to have a yahoo account? i don't know. How would you normally expect to be able to view a link on a post such as this? If you were attempting to view a link.....do you have to have a personal Flickr account?. its becoming rather a tiresome puzzle.
