Acknown Posted 2 July , 2016 Share Posted 2 July , 2016 8404 Cpl Percy William Thomas Stump, born 1895 in Gloucestershire, served in 2/R IRISH 1915 - 1917. He was wounded and discharged in 1917 (services no longer required). It is assumed that he was with the battalion in 1916 on the Somme, but the details of his wounding are unknown, other than it was by gunshot. Can anyone help to fill in the detail? Acknown Posted 11 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 11 July , 2016 More detail. Apparently, he lay in no man's land for days until someone saw signs of movement and went out to drag him in, the rescuer being charged for endangering himself for his trouble. It was a 'grenadier', which I take to be someone from their Grenade Company. Percy later said that it was the cold that saved him, so perhaps during winter. The battalion moved from the 7th to the 16th Division in October 1916. He bore several bullet scars for the rest of his life. Does anyone have a list of casualties for the battalion? Or a hospital list? His record of service isn't on line, apparently, just his medal card. Thanks.

Langdon Posted 12 December , 2016 Share Posted 12 December , 2016 (edited) Not sure if you've seen the Silver War Badge record (wrongly numbered 3/8408) which shows he enlisted on the 1st September 1914 and that he was discharged due to sickness under King's reg. 392 (XVI) - 'No longer physically fit for war service' - on 1st July 1917. 'Services being no longer required' is 392 (XXV). Mike Edited 12 December , 2016 by Langdon

Acknown Posted 14 December , 2016 Author Share Posted 14 December , 2016 More evidence. Here is Percy on enlistment in 1914. Not Royal Irish Rifles; whip, bandoleers, spurs, puttees etc. and a cap badge I can't identify. Not ASC, I think. 4th Queen's Own Hussars? Any offers? Otherwise, his medal, medal and silver badge roll cards only mention RIR. Perhaps he spent a few months in another regiment before his posting, as a RIR soldier, to France.
