peter cluer Posted 1 July , 2016 Share Posted 1 July , 2016 Hello all, I am looking for a bit of info on my grandfathers medal card. I have his medal card which shows his date of entry into theatre of war France being on 4-3-15. His service record shows he was posted to 4A Reserve Brigade on 23 -2 -15. The next entry is a posting to RHA 14 Brigade ammo.column on 27 -1 -17. My dilemma is which unit did he go to France with as 4A Reserve Brigade was based at Woolwich. He was in receipt of 1914 -15 star Roll RFA 8a and 8b page 6104. His Victory and British medals RFA 221b page 84162. He was Driver James Malone 84916 R.F.A. I live in the north east and to save me a wasted trip to the National Archives could you tell me if I would get any info off the medal rolls to show who he was posted to France with. Thank You. Kind Regards Peter
mandy hall Posted 1 July , 2016 Share Posted 1 July , 2016 Both Ancestry and Find My Past are free this weekend, due to Somme Centenary. Medal rolls are on Ancestry. Mandy

peter cluer Posted 2 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 2 July , 2016 Hi Mandy, I have just had a look at the medal rolls on Ancestry are these exact copies of what they have at the national archives. Regards Peter
mandy hall Posted 2 July , 2016 Share Posted 2 July , 2016 Yes they are, unfortunately the big regiments, like RFA and Royal Engineers don't usually give battalions or field companies. Add some extra information to your thread title, like including regiment and soldiers name and it should hopefully attract a RFA specialist who may be able to help. charlie962 Posted 2 July , 2016 Share Posted 2 July , 2016 Peter, Where did you find his service record details that you quote in your original post? I would agree with Mandy that you should edit the thread title; Charlie962
peter cluer Posted 3 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 3 July , 2016 Hi Charlie I paid the Mod 30 pound for a copy of his record as he was a reservist after the war until 1934. I have posted other threads on here about him. It looks like I will have to give up the chase as which battery he went to France with. The medal rolls were really a last resort but alas nothing was shown. Would like to thank you and Mandy for taking the time to reply to my post.
