Guest ca7 Posted 1 July , 2016 Share Posted 1 July , 2016 Hello all, during some research into my great grand father, George Cowlard, I have happened across his medal card which shows him as having the the regtl. no. of 4969 but also 472009, can anyone explain the relevance of this. It also shows he was awarded the victory medal, roll: TP12/101 B/2. what does this refer to? He once spoke of a battle he fought in where he was one of a very few survivors and that the gas effected his lungs. Apart from this he never spoke of the great war. The war medal roll shows that under number 472009 he served from 6.2.17-6.2.19. Can anyone advise me where his travels may have taken him during this time? Many thanks for any help, Craig
johnboy Posted 1 July , 2016 Share Posted 1 July , 2016 The London Regiment was an all TF regiment. He would have been renumbered early 1917. If you go to Long Long Trail, top left of this page you will probably find all the info that you are looking for.
clk Posted 1 July , 2016 Share Posted 1 July , 2016 Hi Craig, Welcome to the forum. He has surviving service papers which are available on FMP here. They should also be available on Ancestry. It looks like he was first posted to 2/12th Battalion on 1st February 1916, was sent abroad on 6th February 1917, and was subsequently posted to the 1/12th Battalion on 30th January 1918. You should be able to follow his likely movements through the respective war diaries which you can download from the National Archives here. The diaries will also be available on Ancestry. Good luck with your research. Regards Chris
Drew-1918 Posted 1 July , 2016 Share Posted 1 July , 2016 Further to what Chris says above, and to clarify the service record details, the 2/12th first arrived in France on the 6th Feb 1918. So, it seems he went over with them. In January 1918, the 1/12th Bn and the 2/12th Bn were amalgamated and so he must have become part of the newly formed or reconstituted '12th battalion'. There is more on this amalgamation etc on the LLT link that Johnboy mentioned. As well as the war dairy, you might like to read the history here: https://archive.org/stream/rangershistorica00whee#page/184/mode/1up Regards, Chris
