Hello , I thought on this special day I would look to see where my late grandfather was with 3HAG , on this night it says they push forward to position F 11 c 9.2 . I would appreciate it if somebody could pinpoint that for me please .

Hi Alan,

In order to find the location, you will need to know which Sheet Number the co-ordinate relates to.

If you don't know that, if you tell us where he was roughly, we should be able to work it out.

Referring to this index

https://library.mcmaster.ca/maps/ww1/ndx5to40.htm

will give you the correct Sheet Number.

For example, the Somme area maps are numbers 51 upwards sometimes with a letter suffix  a to e.

Thanks , I am afraid I don't know the sheet number . They were firing on Montabaun and Mametz on 1st July . The Group HQ it says moved to Orchard Camp at L2 c 7.3 . By the 7th they were doing a night bombardment of Bazentin Le Petit village and Bazentin Le Grand Wood .

I hope that is a bit more help

Hi Alan,

62d makes perfect sense.

If you copy the whole co-ordinate.      62d.L.2.c.7.3

into the search box on the site below, it will show you the map and the satellite view of the area of the HQ.

The position they moved up to would have been  62d.F.11.c.9.2

Just west of Carnoy and 1km south of Mametz village.

Copy and paste the co-ordinate into the Search box.

The format of the co-ordinate has to be :

[Sheet number][Full stop][Letter][Full Stop][Number][Full stop][Letter][Full stop][Number][Full stop][Number]

You don't type in the square brackets

You don't type in the word 'Full stop', you type a full stop character ie one of these........

Don't leave any gaps.

The sheet number can be just a number eg 28, or it could be as you have found out a number and a letter, eg 62d

You enter 62d as 62d not as 62.d

If you enter invalid data, the map returns the default of 0 degrees longitude  0 degrees latitude, ie. in the Gulf of Guinea of West Africa and will just show blue sea.

Make sure the data you have entered or pasted hasn't reset itself, or inserted invalid characters like '+'

As long as you enter that co ordinate as above, it will show you where it is on the map.

There are lots of threads on how to enter co ordinates.
