Alan24 Posted 27 June , 2016 Share Posted 27 June , 2016 Could be barking up the wrong tree here. I'm trying to confirm a name of what I think is a town near Cologne where the BAOR were in April 1919. It reads something like Alice, Allce or similar but can't find it on any maps. Alan. Glengarry1950 Posted 27 June , 2016 Share Posted 27 June , 2016 Hi Alan, Can you show the whole document as this would enable one to study the hand writing for similarities to me it could be " Aliu" ? Cheers Hiram
Alan24 Posted 27 June , 2016 Author Share Posted 27 June , 2016 Hiram, I've now decided it isn't a town in Germany but his wife Alice! Interesting thing here, although he married Alice in 1914, she died in 1929 and Alex Ward married Ada Leathers, whom he is writing to here, in Jan 1930. I've contacted a family member via. Ancestry. Also, he writes Blighty in the address, not England! Here's the card. His full service record survives. Alan.
dgibson150 Posted 27 June , 2016 Share Posted 27 June , 2016 Is it not "Army of the Rhine." and then (new sentence) a person's name " is sending you a souvenir..."??? David

TEW Posted 28 June , 2016 Share Posted 28 June , 2016 I take it you've seen his service record?? Went to France 15/2/18. Posted to 6 FA 7/3/18?? Then admitted 44 CCS (defective vision) 4/10/19 in Oliges, Germany. Back to Mulheim/Cologne 16/12/1919 for demobilization. His record is also on FMP which may have more sheets, will take a look later along with 44 CCS & 6 FA if available. TEW
Guest Posted 28 June , 2016 Share Posted 28 June , 2016 On the date the postcard was written the 6th Field Ambulance was at Monheim am Rhein 17.5 Km NNW of Cologne as the crow flies. The unit had been there since 12th Feb 1919 and left for Caster on 9th April 1919 the relevant war diary is WO 95/1338/4 If you have ancestry it is here click MG

Conscripted in April 1917, not considered A1 so sent to RAMC. His eyes seem to be the problem, which was the cause of his discharge.
