Gareth Davies Posted 27 June , 2016 Share Posted 27 June , 2016 I have it on fairly good authority (Twitter!) that it stands for Official Number. But I can't corroborate that.
Gareth Davies Posted 27 June , 2016 Share Posted 27 June , 2016 From the Navy's personnel directorate: RNR ratings were assigned a new official numbers on each occasion they entered into a new term of enrolment in the RNR. Seamen ratings in their 1st to 4th terms of enrolment used the suffix letters 'A' through to 'D' as part of their official number.Periods of enrolment were for 5 years and the man's record was held on separate cards, a new card would be made out for each new period of enrolment.
