Bate, George help please

Hi

Trying to learn more about a soldier who is listed on the Auckland Grammar School memorial in New Zealand.  According to his school obituary George Bate served with the South Wales Borderers and died as a POW on 16 August 1918.  However, I cannot find a Commonwealth War Graves reference to a likely candidate.  The only Bate to die on 16 August 1918 appears to be a Canadian.

He attended Auckland Grammar then apparently his family returned to Manchester in 1915.  He's said to have enlisted in 1916.  It's possible his initials were G C W Bate

Are there any POW experts in particular who can shed light?

Any info gratefully received!

Possibly 27523 Bate. Quite possible an error on the Memorial, and not uncommon. Don't see him as a POW either but others might have more joy.

Thanks Ralph - I'll let you know.  We are researching all the men on the memorial.  Most were NZEF so I'm lucky to have the service records, but he had me stumped!

Thanks Steve - this is fantastic.  I'd tried the ICRC but just couldn't fathom the "how".  Greatly appreciated.

As he is buried in Vendresse, I am guessing he could have been originally buried in:

MORIEULOIS GERMAN CEMETERY, CREPY-EN-LAONNOIS, where seven British soldiers were buried in July and August 1918.

Just a thought.

Glad you found the route out and back, good background information.

He must have been on the cusp of 18, max, when he enlisted.

He is commemorated on the family grave in Philips Park Cemetery that also bears the inscription of his family: Rebecca Hassall Bate, John J Bate, George Bate, Catherine Bate & Catherine Maud Bate.
