grammar Posted 26 June , 2016 Share Posted 26 June , 2016 Hi Trying to learn more about a soldier who is listed on the Auckland Grammar School memorial in New Zealand. According to his school obituary George Bate served with the South Wales Borderers and died as a POW on 16 August 1918. However, I cannot find a Commonwealth War Graves reference to a likely candidate. The only Bate to die on 16 August 1918 appears to be a Canadian. He attended Auckland Grammar then apparently his family returned to Manchester in 1915. He's said to have enlisted in 1916. It's possible his initials were G C W Bate Are there any POW experts in particular who can shed light? Any info gratefully received! Guest Posted 26 June , 2016 Share Posted 26 June , 2016 Possibly 27523 Bate. Quite possible an error on the Memorial, and not uncommon. Don't see him as a POW either but others might have more joy. Mike

wpf1958 Posted 8 April , 2017 Share Posted 8 April , 2017 As he is buried in Vendresse, I am guessing he could have been originally buried in: MORIEULOIS GERMAN CEMETERY, CREPY-EN-LAONNOIS, where seven British soldiers were buried in July and August 1918. Just a thought. Wilhelm
