Goosegirdle Posted 12 November , 2018 Author Share Posted 12 November , 2018 Did Colonel, later Major-General William Holmes commit a war crime by subjecting some German civilians to the same punishment they meted out to a hapless English missionary? You make a judgement. Also, we see the SS Matunga come and go from Rabaul in late 1914. On a later run in 1917, she was unfortunate enough to meet the German raider SMS Wolf. Her story is also told here by a 15 year old deck hand (Courtesy of a transcript held by the NSW State Library). http://traffic.libsyn.com/6bobaday/Episode_3.4_Flogging_German_civilians.mp3

Goosegirdle Posted 17 January , 2021 Author Share Posted 17 January , 2021 Half Chinese Billy was described as 'a picturesque man-killer' and the 'murderer'. He was almost denied the right to enlist in 1914 to became arguably the best sniper Australia ever produced. Billy returned home, mined gold, drank hard and died alone and almost a pauper at age 57 in a rented room in Brisbane.
