Did Colonel, later Major-General William Holmes commit a war crime by subjecting some German civilians to the same punishment they meted out to a hapless English missionary? You make a judgement.

Also, we see the SS Matunga come and go from Rabaul in late 1914. On a later run in 1917, she was unfortunate enough to meet the German raider SMS Wolf. Her story is also told here by a 15 year old deck hand (Courtesy of a transcript held by the NSW State Library).

Hi folks,

It's not just me talking this time, I have a recording of a Cameleer and Lighthorseman recounting his time in Palestine to his grandson in a 1973 recording. Pure gold! http://traffic.libsyn.com/6bobaday/Episode_4.1_Interview_of_Jim_Briant_Part_1.mp3

Oliver Hogue wrote 3 books, 2 from blog style articles written throughout the war and one a fictional series of letters to a fictional girl named Jean. But his real love was a much younger woman who would become a star in Broadway and Hollywood. His his story is available wherever you download audio or directly: https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/6bobaday/Episode_8.1_Oliver_Hogue_The_Great_War_blogger_Bluegum_Part_1.mp3

Half Chinese Billy was described as 'a picturesque man-killer' and the 'murderer'. He was almost denied the right to enlist in 1914 to became arguably the best sniper Australia ever produced. Billy returned home, mined gold, drank hard and died alone and almost a pauper at age 57 in a rented room in Brisbane. Here is his story on Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/billy-sing-gallipoli-sniper/id1086529863?i=1000502930568  Direct download: https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/6bobaday/Episode_6.4_Billy_Sing_Gallipoli_sniper.mp3
