So far I have found little information on the internet about this chap, other than he was born circa 1878 was the son of Major H C Wilkinson and married to Gladys. He was educated at Wellington and commissioned to West Yorkshire Regiment 1900 saw service in Second South African War. Captain 1910. Transferred to Welsh Regiment then South Wales Borderers. Went to Western Front 1915. Killed/ Died of wounds 7th July 1916. On Thiepval Memorial. Any more info would be much appreciated.

From O'Moore Creagh and Humphris' book on the DSO (sorry if it needs rotating).

According to the history of the SWB, he was killed bringing up the second wave of his battalion (10th SWB) at Mametz Wood. He had recently arrived from commanding the 19th (Pioneer) Bn, Welsh Regiment.

Here is S. J. Wilkinson's entry from the D.S.O. Recipient's Book, which is probably the same as Steven's book entry.

LF

Temp Lieutenant Colonel of the 10th Battalion South Wales Borderers 1st Gwent; killed in the first attack on Mametz Wood.

The Regimental Sergeant Major recorded in his diary "he was buried amongst his boys from Gwent", unfortunately all the graves were lost and Sidney Wilkinson and his men are now remembered on the Thievpal Memorial.
