Remembered Today:

BOMBAY VOLUNTEER ARTILLERY - British Army or Indian Army?

Found an officer with a couple of London Gazette entries under Royal Artillery but his medal card [apparently his, assuming I've got the same chap - seems likely, but that is not the main point] indicates Bombay Volunteer Artillery.

So got me wondering ...???

Were the BVA "British Army" [RA] or "Indian Army"? Was there a difference during WW1?

Please excuse my ignorance and/or terminology.

Thanks.

Kew Library has sets of annuals for both British Army and Indian Army Lists. You could get an answer from these, if you can't get there you could ask for a look-up in that section here.

Dear Matlock1418,

What was his name? This way, knowlegeable GWF wallahs (of which there are many) can get a handle on your interesting request.

Off the cuff, I would say he was an Indian Volunteer: but of course, such artillery officers shifted easily into RA batteries, 1418...

Kindest regards,

Kim.

Volunteer Regiments in India were part of the Indian Army structure. For details see the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Auxiliary Regiments

http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/Auxiliary_Regiments

However all Artillery, except for Mountain Artillery, (and some miscellaneous associated artillery) was part of the Royal Artillery, and hence British Army

As far as I am aware, the Bombay Volunteer Artillery did not fight as a Battery overseas, (out of India) although some individual members did.

There are a number of Indian Army Lists online

http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/Indian_Army_List_online

and British Army Lists, but not as yet Monthly Lists

http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/Military_periodicals_online

Functionally he was Royal Artillery, although nominally he may have been Indian Army.

Cheers

Maureen

The Bombay (and other) Volunteer Artillery were not part of the British Army. They were auxiliary forces of the Indian Army. However, many of these units had officers from the Regular Army (British or Indian) attached to them so your man may have been either.
