Coldstreamer Posted 31 May , 2016 Share Posted 31 May , 2016 https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29369/supplement/11422 4/8656 Private A. E. Jackson, 3rd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) . For conspicuous gallantry from the 27th to the 30th September, 1915, near Vermelles. As a stretcher-bearer, Private Jackson displayed great bravery, particularly on three occasions, when he went out, on his own initiative, and successfully brought in wounded men under very heavy fire. Two of these would undoubtedly have died but for his bravery and total disregard of personal danger. founding using the london gazette and searching using number and surname

sotonmate Posted 31 May , 2016 Share Posted 31 May , 2016 The Medal Index Card for this soldier shows a number of L/8656, has no ref to DCM or MM, and that he was discharged on 25 Feb 1916. Could this have been at time served, and then he signed on again with a new number, so a second MIC somewhere ?
clk Posted 31 May , 2016 Share Posted 31 May , 2016 Hi Andy, Re his MM, in the vast majority of cases it won't be mentioned in war diaries, but as a long shot it is worth checking them. I've seen a couple of Battalion diaries that name a man and have a comment that he was later awarded the medal for his actions. Some of the Divisional General Staff, and A&Q diaries also contain copies of Routine Orders which sometimes name men receiving the MM, and sometimes include a citation. There clearly wasn't standard protocol for these things, but I think that it would be worth checking the diaries even if it's just to rule them out as a potential source. Good luck.
