How can I find information

I have found a certificate that states that my Grandfather - 16770 L/Cpl S Dunn of the 18th Bn Lancashire Fusiliers, was mentioned in despatches on 13th Nov 1916.

How can I find out "what was said"??

Thanks

Alan

Alan,

It is very unlikely that you can find the reason for him being mentioned in despatches. Unlike the higher awards (with the exception of the Military Medal), the citation wasn't published in the London Gazette and there is no central repository of citations from the period.

Your best bet would be to trawl the local newspapers, depending upon where he lived at the time of the war. If he lived in a small town the chances are better. Sometimes the family, on hearing of the award, would take it to the local newspaper who would publish the details.

He could have been mentioned for an act of gallantry not considered quite meritorous enough for a medal, but MIDs were also made for general good service.

Good luck,

Ken
