STEVENG Posted 27 May , 2016 Share Posted 27 May , 2016 Hello I am looking for further additional information into this soldier who was awarded the MM on the 9th April 1917 can someone clarify this would have been during the Battle of Arras. Also can I ask what is the prefix Y in front of this soldiers number would I be right in guessing he could have bee a pre war regular. Any help is greatly appreciated. johnboy Posted 27 May , 2016 Share Posted 27 May , 2016 I think that most Y prefix men attested in a very short period end of August untill around 10th September 1914. It was thought that these men were Special Reservists but some of the attestment forms show that some men had no previous service. Hopefully the two resident experts will be along shortly. kevinrowlinson Posted 27 May , 2016 Share Posted 27 May , 2016 As his records confirm the Y prefix was given to those men posted to either the 5th or 6th Reserve Battalion. In his case the 6th Btn. It had nothing to do with what terms he enlisted under. Kevin

MBrockway Posted 28 May , 2016 Share Posted 28 May , 2016 I believe the OP is a medal collector specialising in MMs. All regiments, but with a lean towards Scottish and rifles. He is also researching those who served from his home town of Coatbridge. Both the KRRC MM's he has asked us about were recently sold by The London Medal Company. His grandfather was rifles - 9/SR. I gave the explanation for why these men were posted to the 5th & 6th Reserve Battalions here, it was necessary to bring these battalions up to the new establishment. There was not nearly enough pre war Special Reservists (6 year term) to meet the number required as can be seen from Martin's breakdown of the RB. Any number of these mens records confirms this ( and I have seen a fair number between Y/6 to Y/1904), not just Sgt. Yeowell's. There is also a reference to the date for when he may have been awarded the MM in his records which, if one were interested, should be obtained.
