Mathias97 Posted 27 May , 2016 Share Posted 27 May , 2016 Hi I was wondering if anybody could tell me on which ship Thomas Prentice served during WWI, his service number was SS5154. He could have served at the battle of Jutland, but that's still unclear at the moment. For what I know he was born 15 January 1895, and came from Norwich. Cheers! sassenach Posted 30 May , 2016 Share Posted 30 May , 2016 If you want to annoy a naval person, talk about serving "on" a ship. The correct nomenclature is "in."
RaySearching Posted 30 May , 2016 Share Posted 30 May , 2016 Ok Saxon I think served on board or aboard HMS Superb during the Battle of Jutland is acceptable
sassenach Posted 31 May , 2016 Share Posted 31 May , 2016 Sorry, but no sailor would say anything other than "I served in HMS xxx." I recently heard the Duke of Edinburgh take someone to task (on TV, I mean, not in person!) for talking about serving "on" a ship. He pointed out that you live in a house, not on it, and that a ship is no different.
