Well, the plot thickens......thanks both for your observations re the possibility of "A" = Australia.

At first glance, this Mole 6 '16 seems too early for the prefix-switch mentioned by Jonathon but there is a re-inspection stamp of '18 just below the broad arrow. So, possibly was shipped down under at war's end to repay the debt of the SMLE's & bayonets that were sent by Australia to UK in 1914.

That is what I was thinking, knowing that you had that re-issue date - is it certainly '18?

IF, but only IF, the fonts match then the Lithgow gives a kind of date - applied after 1920. Next time I go I'll take a camera just in case it is still around. Pickings at the Antika Pazari have been so poor the past 6 months or so I didn't think to do that...

Yes, clearly is '18, as seen under a good glass. Shown in post #5, fourth photo down.

As Jonothan indicated earlier, the A does not = Australia, but on Lithgow produced bayonets relates to the serial number of the rifle it was matched with.

These numbers started with only digits but over time progressed through the alphabetic letter prefixes. I don't believe the A as shown is Lithgow related.

S>S, I accept that it isn't Australia, from your post and also because I would expect to see 'A.' as the abbreviation, while there is not a period after the A in the photo.

Unlikely to be A Coy without a regimental stamp on reverse of pommel, and number is too high for a company.

'A' barracks that holds 500 men ?

JMB, I think your marking will remain as an 'unknown'. If it makes you feel any better, I also have a P1907 that has a letter B marking, so who knows.? :)

Cheers, S>S
