RE training

Hello

I am trying to research the career of a man who was serving in the Indian Royal Marines in India but was moved across to the Royal Engineers in 1917. According to the Gazette, he was seconded to the RE's in April but does not seem to have gone to Mesopotamia until December of that year. Would he have gone to do training in that interim period? And if so, would that have been at Chatham or somewhere else?

If anyone can shed any light on this, I would greatly appreciate it!

Many thanks

Ruth,

More than likely the Corps or the Royal Engineers would have gave him training in basic combat engineering, such as bridging, laying of razor wire, or even he could have been trained in tunneling, demolitions. But saying that he could have received more specialist training in bomb disposal.

I have a close friend that served with the Royal engineers prior to his transfer to the RAVC I will speak to him and find out where the corps museum is as they may be able to shed more light on this matter.

Can you post his name and rank please? It seems to me, on the little information given, that he is likely to have been an officer in the Royal Indian Marine i.e. a sailor. In that case he would have been transferred or attached to the Inland Water Transport in Mesopotamia.
