Remembered Today:

'INDIANISED' DIVISIONS - LOSS OF TERRITORIAL TITLES

Hi All

Can any forum members please tell me if the 10 (Irish), 53 (Welsh) and 60 (2/2 London), actually lost their territorial titles and simply became the 10, 53 and 60 Divisions after they were 'Indianised in 1918 ?.

Also, when the 16 (Irish) Division was reconstituted in 1918 with only one Irish battalion serving in the division did it retain its Irish title ?.

Best regards

10th, 53rd & 60th do indeed appear to have lost their territorial titles coincident with the change over to Indian battalions

see the OoB as it appears in 'The Advance of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force'

In the case of the 10th it refers to "the necessary change in title"

and in the case of the 60th it refers to "the Territorial title was dropped."

Hi Michael

Thank you for that useful info, I shall certainly have a look at the OOB in the book you quoted.

Any ideas on the 16 (Irish) ?

Becke's Orders of Battle, Part 3A, is silent on whether 16th Division dropped the (Irish) but I suspect that probably happened de facto when the division returned to England in mid-June 1918 and was reconstituted. It still retained one Irish battalion: 5/Royal Irish Fusiliers.
