The captions read:

Bulgarian MG09 Machine Gun

Captured on the Salonika front by the 2nd Battalion, The Cameron Highlanders

Military Cross

Awarded to Captain William Batty of the 13th Battalion The Manchester Regiment for bravery at Salonika April 1917, with his cigarette case.

Note: MC was presumably awarded for bravery during the first battle of Doiran.

  • 2 weeks later...

MG captured at the village of Homondos during operation on 13-14 October 1917. This is one of the actions that will be covered by a Salonika battlefield tour I'm leading next week.

Nope. I was there last week on a recce for a British army staff ride and on arrival in Dojran it was the usual busy Sunday lunchtime with folks in restaurants by the lake. The large refugee camp is some 30km from Dojran south of Ghevgelia. We did pass some police cars parked up at a hotel in Nov Dojran (obviously used as a base for reinforcements) and found a pile of civilian clothing up on Pip Ridge, which must have been dropped by refugees as the place is in the middle of nowhere in terms of towns/villages and is right on the Greece - FYROM border. My next tour group leaves on Sunday morning.
