Bedford Highlanders

I came across this area on the Bedfordshire Library website whilst looking for something else. Quite possible been mentioned here before but just in case not.

In 1914 20,000 Highlanders marched into Bedford to undergo training before being sent to the front. The 1911 Census gave the population of Bedford as 39,183 so the impact of such a large number of soldiers arriving in the Town was tremendous. Looks like most of the images etc come from Richard Galley (Piper - of this parish) and one of mine!

Richard has a wonderful blog covering this period too - SEE HERE (its also listed in the sources for the library site)

Thanks for posting I don't remember seeing it previously.

There is a nice thread on here too (Raster Scanning's) with many of the images: although some of the early ones are now missing from the thread

I tried a search on Bedfordshire but I was getting too many matches!

I saw the blog, it s linked from the Library / Council one, and passed on to someone interested in piping.
