laughton Posted 30 March , 2016 Share Posted 30 March , 2016 I still have not found my Canadian Captain in this cemetery but many more are appearing as I go through them one-by-one! As far as I can see, there is only one (1) Lance Corporal of the King's Royal Rifle Corps that was killed after they had passed though Passchendaele and reached the Green Line on November 6, 1917. Of the seven (7) total, the other six (6) were killed in the 3rd week of October, so long before the front line had passed through Passchendaele. As always, I leave it to the British experts to determine if there is merit to this case. He is lin Plot 12 Row B Grave 11 at the Passchendaele New British Cemetery and he was recovered at 28.D.6.d.6.2 which places him on the road on the east side of the village to the south. Admin ss002d6252 Posted 30 March , 2016 Admin Share Posted 30 March , 2016 CWGC appear to have Moss' date of death wrong - the soldiers effects records show death as 5/11/16 and his estate was settled up in April 17. Craig
laughton Posted 31 March , 2016 Author Share Posted 31 March , 2016 That would be interesting! There are two (2) Lance Corporals of the King's Royal Rifle Corps on the Thiepval Memorial for 5 November 1916 (Briggs & Penny) - so did they switch places? If he was not a Lance Corporal at the time there are 17 more. If he was not K.R.R.C. then the list is unmanageable. But then who is in Plot 12 Row B Grave 11 at the Passchendaele New British Cemetery? Can you give me some proof that Moss was dead a year earlier so I can take this up with the CWGC? laughton Posted 11 January , 2018 Author Share Posted 11 January , 2018 Craig: I am going back through all the files, so I just noticed I never PM'd my email address. On it's way! I did not previously have access to the UK records on Ance$try but now I do, so I can now delve further into these cases. If Moss was KIA prior to 16 August 1917, then he should be on the Menin Gate Memorial, however the CWGC does indicate there were "exceptions" to the rule. Taking another look at Moss, #8339 shows he was a pre-war regular. #8338 was allocated on 10 Sep 1907 so Moss, his number being allocated just afterwards, would still be serving in August 1914 in his initial 7 year term with the colours. The fact he was a regular would mean that his £13 war gratuity was paid gross (as opposed to net). £13 was paid for 28 months qualifying war time service. For the way the war gratuity is worked out this would tie in with a death on 5/11/16. I would be confident that Moss isn't your man just from the war gratuity alone but I would also add that the register also shows that the first monetary payment sent to his family following his death was made on 23 April 1917. The other possibility would be if he was in the area in Nov 16 when he was killed. Craig
laughton Posted 13 January , 2018 Author Share Posted 13 January , 2018 If Moss is off the list, which we should correct with the CWGC once confirmed, then we have to expand the list. These are the candidates, with links to the war diaries I could find, for the period after 1 October 1917. I could not find all of them. Regardless, it would be a long list to check! Perhaps someone familiar with the regiment would know enough about their locations to narrow down the list. After that, it would have to be a case of further investigation only if there was only one candidate from that battalion. For example, I think we can eliminate a search on any of the men in the 7th, 8th, 9th, 13th, 16th, or 17th battalions as they have multiple candidates. The war diary for the 11th Battalion many be missing or misplaced as it jumps from September 1917 (page 517 of 752) to March 1918 (page 550 of 752). surname forename death Kings R.R.Corp. # Division Brigade RODGER JOHN RIDLEY 01-10-17 13th Bn.
