“Dear family Hänel,
Since we were suddenly moved to another part of the front, it was unfortunately impossible for me to let ... Max’s grave. At the last minute I got hold of a picture, so that you at least can see how the graves look like. It looks … like the others and is also perfectly taken care of.

Cordial greeting
Yours Albert Krause

"Liebe Fam. Hänel,
da wir ganz
plötzlich auf einen anderen

In letzter Minute habe

damit Sie wenigstens
sehen, wie die Gräber aus-
sehen. Es sieht … so aus
wie die anderen und
werden auch tadellos gepflegt.

“Rethel, 5.4.15
Dear Helne [Helen ?]
I have received the parcel, which I was very glad for and I thank you very much for it.
Hopefully you and your two children are well and all in good health, what I can also write from myself, thank goodness. Dear Helne, but we are terribly fed up, it is a sad life, what one sees and hears ...

How things will turn out – I am curious to know. It is not as easy here as ... [one?] thinks. The French and the English [?] are also good soldiers. What this has cost and will still cost for humans none of you in the country [Germany] has any idea about. It is a real tragedy. We cannot write everything you might know [?] already?! Now farewell and stay healthy. Cordial greetings
from your brother-in-law Arthur "

„Rethel, 5.4.15
Liebe Helne [Helen?]
Das Paket habe ich erhalten, worüber
ich mich herzlich gefreut habe, und sage
dir meinen besten Dank dafür.
Hoffentlich geht es dir mit deinen beiden
Kindern auch recht gut und seid [?] alle
gesund, was ich gottseidank von
mir auch schreiben kann. Liebe Helne
wir haben es aber schrecklich satt, das
ist doch ein trauriges Leben, was
man sieht und hört ist nichts, …..
……
zu denken. Wie das noch wird mal
werden bin ich selber gespannt.
Es ist nicht so leicht hier wie …
denkt, die Franzosen und die Engländer [?]
das sind auch gute Soldaten. Denn
was das an und für Menschen
gekostet hat und noch kosten wird
davon hat keiner eine Ahnung von
Euch im Lande und wie das hier zugeht.
Es ist ein richtiges Trauerspiel. Wir
können nur nicht alles schreiben wirst
wohl schon wissen [?] ?! Nun lebe wohl und
… bleib recht gesund. Sei herzlich gegrüßt
von deinem Schwager Arthur“

Yes, something like that.

However, this was more popular in the first years of the war than in the last.

Did not find an Albert Rinck in the Verlustenliste, but an Adolf Rinck from Odenhausen (but later corrected to Rink), who was first missing and then reported as POW. So maybe Albert referred to his brother Adolf.

Please could this thread have a different title? There is already a very long running Postcards thread, a classic of its kind.

This current one is excellent in itself, and deserves a distinctive title.

Please?

No problem. Better?

Well, I am aware of at least one other thread with the same topic name, but in another section.

But I did not check when I started this one, which I probably should have done.

Written the 2.12.15

War zone

Elton

Near Baroncourt East of Verdun

A silent prayer at a hero’s grave

(German steamroller and ambulance)

Dear parents, brothers and sisters!

Have received your lovely letter and thank you heartily. I'm glad that you all are still healthy, which is also the case with me. Now we have heavy rain and wind every day. And you have deep snow. See you again all well in the beloved home

Best regards your son and brother Edwin

„Geschrieben den 2.12.15

Liebe Eltern und Geschwister!

Habe euren lieben Brief

erhalten und danke Euch herz-

lich dafür. Ich freue mich dass

ihr alle noch gesund seid, was

bei mir auch noch der Fall

ist. Wir haben jetzt alle

Tage tüchtigen Regen und

Wind. Und bei Euch liegt tiefer

Schnee. Auf ein gesundes

Wiedersehen in der lieben

Heimat grüßt Euch alle

herzlich Euer Sohn und Bruder Edwin“

Edwin Philipp is listed as dead in the Verlustenliste in September 1916, probably him since it is the same unit (LIR 102). Hinterjessen (place name in the Verlustenliste) is about 2 km from Gross-Graupa (the address on the card). http://des.genealogy.net/search/show/4553820

Very interesting postcards - thanks for posting them.

Does the writing at the top of the front of Edwin's postcard indicate who the hero was?

Hi Christine - There is a crossover between this interesting thread and the other substantial one on German cemeteries. Some of us posted cemetery postcards in the other thread but they would also fit here, perhaps better. Do you think there is any way of cross-referring the two threads?

As someone who put cards in the other thread, I don't really want to duplicate my posts, but I would if you wished.

Neil, no unfortunately it does not: The writing on the top of the front is the sender’s address (which I can not read entirely):

Abs. Soldat E. Philipp, Landw. Inf. Reg. 102 1. Batl. 2. Komp, 5. Reserv. korps, 5. Armee (?)

Gwyn, I am aware of a certain overlap. Here I was originally more interested in the texts of the cards in the other tread more in the cemeteries themselves taking either the Volksbund member journal as a starting point ….or a view on a postcard….. But I see that this differentiation is not very clear and maybe less clear over time and somehow arbitrary. Contributions and comments are of course always very welcome and I leave up to you where you think it is most suitable to post them. Or post them twice or refer to a link. I hope this helps.

I inform you with a few lines that I have arrived very well at my accommodation. Today we have again very nice weather and it would just be nice if one could make a nice walk with one’s family. Otherwise I am all right.

I am wondering how old he was. No name or sender is given, but the unit: Magazin-Fuhrpark-Kolonne 2 der Bayerischen Ersatz Division. (Found only two soldiers on a Bavarian Verlustenliste belonging to that unit).
