BROTHERS

Colonist, Volume LVII, Issue 14153, 2 August 1916, Page 4

Private P. M'Nabb (son of ,Mr E M'Nabb, of Motueka) killed in France formerly lived in Palmerston North, and was one of six brothers who volunteered for service. One was rejected for physical reasons after being in camp at Rangiotu for some months. The others went forward with their units. Two were killed on Gallipoli, and the third son has now given his life in France, where the two remaining brothers are still fighting. The youngest was just over 18 when he went away with the force

It is a long time since this interesting thread was started and I am amazed at how many names of brothers have emerged. I have spent some time looking at it but have not yet come across two distant relatives. They may well be on your list and I could have overlooked them, if not, I would like to add their names.

JAMES GREER, Sapper, Postal Section, Royal Engineers, No. 59804, KIA at Gallipoli 23 August 1915, age 27. Commemorated on Helles Memorial.

WILLIAM (or WALLACE) GREER, Rifleman, 8th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, No. 12847, KIA at the Somme, 2 July 1916, age 22. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial.

Both were sons of Mrs Mary Greer of Belfast.

Frev,

Yes I do have them, but not all the extra detail which is all new to me, thank you. Surprisingly the list seems to be drying up, but I cannot believe there aren't more especially amongst the British forces which are poorly documented compared with the AIF and wouldn't it be good to discover some French ones!

Kind Regards,

Bob

Son of James and Catherine Rogers, of 17, Queen St., North Ormesby, Middlesbrough, England.

Hi Bob

I think you will have most of the folowing on John and James already

From my notes

Sergeant Major JOHN ROGERS

12/128 Auckland Regiment, N.Z.E.F

John Prior to the war emigrated to New Zealand he enlisted as Pte into the 6 Hauraki Coy and was soon

promoted through the ranks to Sergeant Major The Aucklander’s were the first of the New Zealanders to go

ashore at Gallipoli at Anzac Cove They had arrived on the TS Lutzow, John was killed in the the Battle of The

Landings aged 24 on 25th April 1915 in fighting at the hill known as Baby 700

The history of the Auckland Regiment carries the following passage,

As he lay dying Sergeant Major Rogers raised himself on his elbow and spoke to the

men passing on up, “Don’t let them beat you boys, don’t let them beat you.”

John was the son of James an iron foundry labourer and Catherine Rogers of North Ormesby Middlesbrough

His father and siblings can be found on the 1911 census residing at 4 Short Street North Ormesby

his mother Catherine and John absent from the census, a later address for his parents was

17 Queen Street North Ormesby Johns last New Zealand address was Leicester House Huntly

LONE PINE MEMORIAL

Gunner JAMES ROGERS

46425 Royal Field Artillery ( A" Bty. 170th Bde)

Wounded in action James died of his wounds aged 27 on 17th May 1916

He was the son of James and Catherine Rogers

James can be found on the 1911 census residing with his father an iron foundry labourer and siblings at

4 Short Street North Ormesby Middlesbrough employed as a ship plate riveter (His mother absent from the family home)

James with both of his parents and siblings can be found on the 1901 census residing at 7 Woodhouse Terrace Middlesbrough

Born Middlesbrough enlisted Southwark London

LOUVENCOURT MILITARY CEMETERY

Whilst I have not yet found conclusive evidence (not for the want of trying) I believe the following soldier to

be the third son of James and Catherine also killed in action

SDGW have the following Joseph Rogers down as born Middlesbrough residing North Ormesby

the only Joseph Rogers on the 1911 census is the third son of James and Catherine, aged 13 on the census,

which would make him aged 18 in 1916

Private JOSEPH ROGERS

3/7920 8th Bn Yorkshire Regiment

Joseph was killed in action in an attack on the the village of Contalmaison on 10th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme

Born and enlisted Middlesbrough (resided North Ormesy)

THIEPVAL MEMORIAL

regards Ray

Edited Oct 2007   5 years later

I have confirmed from the soldiers effects that Joseph Rodgers was the third son of James and Catherine who was KIA

The family name originally was spelt as Rodgers this over time became shortened and spelt as Rogers

On the 1901 census The family are Rodgers,

On the 1911 census, The family residing at North Ormesby Middlesbrough are shown as Rogers,

Catherine (John James and Joseph’s) mother is absent from the family home

Catherine can be found on the 1911 census visiting relatives at 20 Lyndhurst Street Thornaby her name spelt Rodgers

On Sergeant Major JOHN ROGERS 12/128 Auckland Regiment, N.Z.E.F application form to join the New Zealand Defence Force which can be found among his service records John signed his name as Rodgers although on later service papers Rogers is shown

The following cutting from The Illustrated Chronicle dated 8th July 1915

He is once again shown as Rodgers
