bobpike Posted 6 September , 2006 Author Share Posted 6 September , 2006 Geoff, Steve & Martin, Again thank you - great stuff. I knew of the Siegenbergs but not the Cottrells. I would be most interested if the Nanney brother can be identified. Yes, I am interested in father/son casualties with a Gallipoli connection, too, but have not started 'collecting' them, as it were, Bob

Argyle, Armstrong, Bonar, Brewer, Brittan, Burr, Cable, Catchpole, Cogar, Corlett, Cox, Douglas, Earley, Egglestone, Feldwick, Foster, Gripp, Happer, Harrison, Hunter, Jenkins, Jones, Kay, Knight, Leeks, Lewis, Lynch, McInnes, McKinnon, McNabb, McNeil, Mailman, Mellor, Murphy, O'Keefe, Overton, Patterson, Price, Primrose, Richards, Scales, Sheerin, Simpson, Smyth, Sole, Sprott, Statham, Stewart, Stokes, Sustins, Tohill, Varcoe, Walker, Watson, and Watson. A further two pairs of brothers but one brother served with a different force: Mounsey (brother killed with British at Helles) and Tansley (brother killed with Australians at Anzac). Also a futher two pairs of brothers died but one brother served in a NZ Military unit with no Gallipoli service: Abbott and Robertson. Kookaburra Posted 9 September , 2006 Share Posted 9 September , 2006 Diane, You should not have given the game away, I was so impressed! In fact, I still am and also in your debt, thank you, Bob You're very welcome Bob, When I saw the initial list of names, just as I posted to you I thought then that one would have difficulty finding them all. It was later that I discovered pages of all the men who served at Gallipoli at the back of the book along with those whose brothers died. I guess you noticed a lot of the brothers died the same day. Cheers, Diane
alliekiwi Posted 9 September , 2006 Share Posted 9 September , 2006 Yes, it's amazing how many died on the same day, isn't it? Just terrible. I wonder which was worse for families - losing sons one by one, or finding out multiple deaths at once? I've got a book called 'Gallipoli: A Guide to New Zealand Battlefields and Memorials' by Ian McGibbon, written for the 90th commemorations last year. On the page about the New Zealand Memorial to the Missing on Chunuk Bair it says: In all 850 men are commemorated on this memorial. There are at least eight sets of brothers. In six cases both brothers died on 8 August (Argyle, Corlett, McKinnon, Mellor, Murphy, Stokes); the others fell on consecutive days, 8-9 August (Douglas, Statham). I know you've got all of those, but just thought I'd quote anyway. Allie

The Statham bros is interesting. STATHAM, Frank Hadfield; 8/977a Maj. (4.5.15. Enlisted as Capt. 5.8.14), North Otago Coy, OIB; MB; KIA on Chunuk Bair, 9.8.15; Bean states he was killed on Chunuk Bair 9.8.15 alongside his brother: "About 5 a.m.., while the Turkish attack upon them was still at its height, three high-explosive howitzer shells, coming from the right rear, burst among them, one exploding in the front trench on the left, wrecking the trench, and killing Maj. Statham together with his brother beside him, as well as Sergeant-Major Porteous and six or seven men. Do you have the Sustin bros as being killed the same day too? Guest geoff501 Posted 18 September , 2006 Share Posted 18 September , 2006 As you say CWGC says there is a third Barlow brother - Andrew, but S'Died lists no Andrew Barlows? Bob, Is it Arthur, not Andrew? There are a couple of A. Barlow from 1918 listed by CWGC, who may have been missed from SDGW. Both are in northern regiments, so it is possible one is the third brother. One died 11/11/1918, I seem to be finding this date a lot recently. I've not yet checked on SDGW. Casuality Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 152 to 154. Cemetery: HELLES MEMORIAL I suspect this may be one brother, SDGW gives their birth and enlist as Bolton for both. Service numbers are close, but check the dates: Name: FISHER, MATTHEW Initials: M Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment: The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment Unit Text: 6th Bn. Date of Death: 10/08/1915 Service No: 12517 Casuality Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 152 to 154. Cemetery: HELLES MEMORIAL Among the Albert Fishers, there is a Pte 17425 born and enlisted at Bolton, also the 6th LNLR - killed in action at Gallipoli on 09/08/1915, again note the date. No NOK details in CWGC. If my suspicions are right, this is so much pain and tragedy for their parents. Needs a northern newspaper archive rat to confirm this. Perhaps they can also check the Barlow fellow for you. Was the LNLR a Pal's battalion?
