Guest Lodestar Posted 2 August , 2012 Share Posted 2 August , 2012 QUOTE (geoff501 @ Sep 2 2008, 06:30 PM) Bob, Possible set here. Pte Mullen may have died of wounds received at Gallipoli. The AIF record states he was the first Australian soldier to die in England. (think I've heard that quoted before somewhere of someone?) Cannot check his record at NAA, which would tell, as it is running slow at present. Pte Hugh James MULLEN 14th Bn. 19th May 1915 Birmingham (Lodge Hill) Cemetery Pte David MULLEN 2nd Pioneers 13th October 1917 Aeroplane Cemetery http://www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8080/showPerson?pid=217277 Got through finally. On page 35: Died of wounds received in action at Gallipoli. Hi all, and late response to this as recently joined. Yes, Hugh and David are brothers (my G-uncles) and yes according to newspaper reports from the period - both UK and AU based Hugh was the first Aussie to pass from wounds recieved at Gallipoli, and apparently, recieveing a state funeral in recognition of that. RaySearching Posted 10 September , 2012 Share Posted 10 September , 2012 Hi Bob Just a small update regarding Driver CHARLES WHITFIELD 33859 69th Bty Royal Field Artillery who's details I posted earlier in the thread (and his brother John William who died at home) I have come across a couple of pages of Charles's service files Whilst he may have seen service on Gallipoli he died of Bronco pneumonia on 25th October 1918 at Deolali near Bombay India so Charles is not strictly a Gallipoli casualty regards Ray
