Albert Beecher was born in Masbrough in 1895 to Thomas and Sarah Ellen Beecher of 54 Badsley Moor Lane Rotherham.

He enlisted in Barnsley to the 13th battalion York & Lancaster regiment service number 45169 in Jan 1916 and later transferred to 11th battalion East Yorkshire regiment service number 51792.

He was killed in action on 28 Sep 1918 at Messines aged 23. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial to the 35,000 missing from the Ypres salient.

James Besley was born in Rotherham in 1890 to Jesse and Emma Besley of 16 Gladys Street, Rotherham.

He enlisted in Rotherham to the 8th battalion York & Lancaster regiment service number 22102 and later transferred to 9th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (Hussars) as Sergeant with service number 41359.

He was killed in action at the Battle of the Selle on 24th Oct 1918 aged 28 and is buried at Bermerain Communal cemetery in a mass grave with 13 of his comrades who were killed on the same day.

Joseph Cook was born in Sheffield in 1882 to Joseph and Mary Cook of 70 Badsley Moor Lane Rotherham. He served with the 10th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 19738 and landed in France on 19 Sep 1915. He was killed in action on 3 Jul 1916 aged 34 following the attack on Fricourt. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the 72,000 missing from the Somme campaign.

Cyril Crompton Davy was born in Rotherham in 1897 to Edward F Davy, a chemist, and Ethel of “Florence Villa”, Parkfield Road, Rotherham.

He served with 6th battalion Queens Own Cameron Highlanders service number S/40436. He died of wounds on 18th July 1917 aged 20 and is buried at Dozinghem Military cemetery.

Stephen Dobson was born in Bingley in 1878 to Matthew and Eliza Dobson. He married Dora Mary Lamkin in 1909 and they lived at 21 Union Street Masbrough Rotherham. He served with the 1/6th battalion Prince of Wales Own West Yorkshire regiment service number 3804 and died of wounds on 5th Jul 1916 aged 38 following the attack on Thiepval. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing.

Herbert Flintham was born in Rotherham in 1894 to John William and Emma Flintham of Stag Cottages Herringthorpe Rotherham. In Jan 1914 he enlisted to the local territorials and served with F company 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 1873. He landed in France on 13 Apr 1915 and was killed in action on 15 Dec 1915 while in trenches near the Yser canal Boesinghe in the Ypres salient Belgium aged 21. He is buried in Bard Cottage cemetery.

Cromwell Gabbitas was born in Worksop in 1882 to James and Emily Gabbitas. He married Maria Foster in Rotherham in 1904 and they lived at 16 Clifton Avenue Rotherham. He enlisted to the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in Oct 1914 but was discharged in Mar 1915 due to a problem with his eyesight. He re-enlisted in May 1915 to 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 3845 and landed in France on 27 Oct 1915. He suffered gas poisoning in Dec 1915 and died on 4 May 1916 aged 34 of natural causes, cerebral haemorrhage, at Rouen and was buried at St Sever cemetery.

Charles George Gellatly was born in Stonehaven Scotland in 1887 to William and Isabella Gellatly. He served with 9th battalion Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry service number 39752. He landed in France in early 1916 and was killed by shellfire at Polygon Wood near Ypres on 4 Nov 1917 aged 30. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial.

William Gray was born in Rotherham in 1882 to Henry and Mary Ann Gray. He married Elizabeth Annie Foster in 1906 and lived at 12 Johnson Street off Badsley Moor Lane Rotherham. He enlisted in June 1915 and served with 2nd battalion Durham Light Infantry service number 27371. He landed in France on 21 Dec 1915 and was killed in action near Ypres on 30 Apr 1916 aged 34. He is buried at Essex Farm cemetery in Belgium.

Leonard Grimmer was born in Masbrough Rotherham in 1891 to George and Florence Grimmer of 42 Broom Grove Rotherham. He enlisted in the York and Lancaster regiment but was transferred to Hawke battalion Royal Naval Division service number KW722. He landed in France on 5 Oct 1914 and was involved in the defence of Antwerp from 6 Oct 1914. He was taken as a prisoner of war on 9 Oct 1914 and died in captivity on 15 Apr 1918 aged 27. The International Red Cross records state he died from a fractured skull and other injuries by intentionally jumping from a hospital window. He is buried at Berlin South Western cemetery.

Thomas Edward Maltby Grout was born in Bradford in 1895 to Samuel and Eliza Grout. They lived at 94 Badsley Moor Lane, Rotherham. He served with the 9th City of London battalion Royal Fusiliers service number 19278 and landed in France on 22 Mar 1916. He was killed in action on 11 Jun 1916 aged 21 and is buried at Vermelles British cemetery.

John Hetherington was born in Rotherham in 1894 to William and Alice Hetherington of 53 Oxford Street Rotherham. He enlisted in the 8th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 17460 and landed in France on 27 Aug 1915. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 aged 21 during an assault on the German trench positions near Ovillers. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing.

Tom Hetherington (cousin of John above) was born in Rotherham in 1883 to Tom and Martha Hetherington of 55 Oxford Street Rotherham. He enlisted with the 10th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 34125 and landed in France on 13 Apr 1915. He died of wounds at 6th casualty clearing station on 27 Sep 1916 aged 34 and is buried at Barlin Communal cemetery.

Charles Edward Himsworth was born in Masbrough in 1882 to Charles and Martha Himsworth of Lord Street Rotherham. He served with C company 1st battalion Prince of Wales Own West Yorkshire regiment service number 19679 and landed in France on 9 Dec 1915. He was killed in action on 26 Aug 1916 aged 34 during an attack on Lesboeufs and is buried at Knightsbridge cemetery on the Somme.

Ernest Hodkin was born in Rotherham in 1893 to Albert and Ada Hodkin of 7 Clifton Avenue Rotherham. He was a pony driver underground at a colliery and enlisted with the York and Lancaster regiment but was transferred to Drake battalion Royal Naval Division service number KP413. He was killed in action on 28 Mar 1918 aged 24. He was buried by the Germans at Guillemont German cemetery and his remains were exhumed in 1924 and reburied at Peronne Road cemetery.

William Henry Howell was born in Oldham in 1889 to Frederick Henry and Mary Ellen Howell of “Somerset House” Clifton Mount Rotherham. He enlisted in Sep 1914 to the 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 2427 and landed in France on 13 Apr 1915. He was killed in a gas attack on 19 Dec 1915 while in trenches near the Yser canal Boesinghe in the Ypres salient Belgium aged 26. He is buried in Bard Cottage cemetery.

Arthur Cecil Evans Jubb was born in Rotherham in 1897 to Arthur and Sarah Jubb of “Lynwood”, Broom Road Rotherham.

He enlisted in Dec 1915 to the 3rd battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 36130 and landed in France in Dec 1916. He was wounded in Apr 1917 with a gunshot wound to his back, fracturing 2 ribs and penetrating his lung. After a long spell in hospital at the 2nd Western General hospital in England he returned to France in Sept 1917. He was hospitalised back to England in Oct 1917 with trench foot and treated at Leith military hospital before being discharged in Dec 1917. He returned to France again on 14 March 1918 and was posted to the 7th battalion York and Lancaster regiment. He died of wounds to his chest and legs received in action by enemy shelling at Forceville on 21 April 1918 at 51st field ambulance aged 20. He is buried at Varennes Military cemetery.

Ernest William Jubb was born in Keighley in 1891 to Henry and Rebecca Jubb of 22 Clifton Grove Rotherham. He enlisted in the Royal Navy in Jan 1909 service number J1686 and served on the newly built HMS Amphion from 1913. War was declared with Germany on 4 Aug 1914 and on 5 Aug 1914 the Amphion was patrolling the North Sea and engaged and sank a German warship. On 6 Aug 1914 they were returning to port when the ship struck a mine and sank with the loss of 151 lives. The Amphion was the first loss of the Royal Navy in the Great War and Ernest Jubb was the first Rotherham casualty aged 23. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval memorial.

Sydney Knowles was born in Rotherham in 1897 to James and Mary Elizabeth Knowles of 30 Broom Terrace, Rotherham.

He served with the 1/8th battalion Durham Light Infantry service number 6268 and died of wounds at 39th casualty clearing station at Warloy on 19th Dec 1916 aged 19 . He is buried at Allonville communal cemetery.

William Lambert was born in Keighley in 1892. He lived at 16 Clifton Grove Rotherham with his mother Elizabeth. He served with 7th battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers service number 2123 and sailed from Liverpool on 9 Jul 1915 landing at Suvla Bay Gallipoli on 7 Aug 1915. He was killed in action on 9 Aug 1915, just 2 days after landing, aged 23. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles memorial in Turkey to the 21,000 missing from the Gallipoli campaign.

Frederick George Lamkin was born in Rotherham in 1896 to Alfred and Emma Lamkin of 3 Gladys Street Rotherham. He enlisted in Aug 1914 to the 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 3293 and landed in France on 13 Aug 1915. He was killed in action in Flanders on 18 Apr 1918 aged 21. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial.

John Leesley was born in Sheffield in 1894 to John and Alexandra Leesley of 12 Clifton Avenue Rotherham. In Jul 1912 he enlisted to the 3rd battalion Duke of Wellington’s West Riding regiment service number 10443 but was discharged at his own request on payment of £10 in Dec 1912. He re-enlisted in 1915 to the 1/5th battalion East Kents (The Buffs) service number 241498 and was killed in action against Turkish forces in Mesopotamia (Iraq) on 18 Oct 1917 aged 23. He is buried in Baghdad North Gate war cemetery.

Harold William Liversidge was born in Rotherham in 1882 to William and Emma Liversidge (daughter of Alderman W H Gummer) of “Rossholme” Clifton Lane Rotherham. He enlisted in Oct 1915 to the 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 203811 and landed in France in Jul 1917. He died of wounds at 44th casualty clearing station following action attacking German pill-boxes at Polygon Wood Passchendaele on 17 Oct 1917 aged 34. He is buried at Nine Elms British cemetery.

Aaron William Lloyd was born in Salford Lancs in 1885 to Aaron and Ann Lloyd. He enlisted in Scunthorpe to the 1/5th battalion Lincolnshire regiment service number 3205 and landed in France on 1 Mar 1915. He was posted as missing presumed dead on 13 Oct 1915 aged 30 during the Battle of Loos. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos memorial to the 20,000 missing from actions in the area.

Charles Albert Marcroft was born in Rotherham in 1884 to Joseph and Fanny Marcroft of 18 Oxford Street Rotherham. He enlisted in Aug 1915 to the 1/4th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 202243 and landed in France on 15 Aug 1916. He was killed in action on 9 Oct 1917 aged 33 at Passchendaele. He is buried at Tyne Cot cemetery.

Clifford Frank Marshall was born in Rotherham in 1892 to Joseph and Ellen Marshall of 24 Newton Street Rotherham. He enlisted in the 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 2985 and landed in France on 28 Jun 1915. He died of wounds suffered near the Yser canal Boesinghe at 3rd West Riding field ambulance on 5 Dec 1915 aged 23 and is buried at Essex Farm cemetery.

Joseph McGarry was born in Rotherham in 1887 to William and Ann McGarry of 170 Middle Lane Rotherham. He enlisted in Aug 1914 to the 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 74 and landed in France on 13 Apr 1915. He was killed in action during a trench mortar attack on 14 Aug 1915 aged 28 and is buried at Talana Farm cemetery.

Harold George Medley was born in Rotherham in 1895 to Frederick and Hephzibah Medley of 19 Clifton Lane Rotherham. He enlisted in the 12th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 992 and landed in France in early 1916. He was killed on 1 Jul 1916 during the attack on Serre. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial.

Samuel Millward was born in Rotherham in 1893 to Samuel and Margaret Millward of 23 Lister Street Rotherham. He enlisted in Mar 1916 to 157th Field Company Royal Engineers service number 216240 and landed in France on 19 Jun 1917. He suffered a gun shot wound to his left thigh on 8 Apr 1918 and died at number 8 General Hospital Rouen in France aged 24. He is buried at Bois-Guillaume Communal cemetery.

Arthur Morley was born in Normanton in 1889 to Arthur and Mary Ann Morley. He enlisted in the 2/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 240891 and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was posted as missing presumed dead on 27 Nov 1917 aged 28 following action at Bourlon Wood in the Battle of Cambrai. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Cambrai memorial to the 7,000 missing from that battle.

Ernest Morley (brother of Arthur above) was born in Rotherham in 1895 to Arthur and Mary Ann Morley. He enlisted in Aug 1914 to the Army Cyclist Corps service number 2137 and landed in France on 13 Jul 1915. He transferred to 2nd battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 26397 in Apr 1916. He was posted as wounded and missing on 12 Oct 1916 during an attack on Zenith trench and presumed dead aged 21. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial.

George Morley (brother of Arthur and Ernest above) was born in New Sharlston in 1886 to Arthur and Mary Ann Morley. He enlisted in Sep 1914 to the 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 240494 and landed in France on 13 Apr 1915. He was wounded in the abdomen in Jul 1916 and evacuated back to England. He returned to France in Apr 1917 and suffered from gas poisoning in Aug 1917. He rose to the rank of Company Sgt Major and was killed in action on 26 Apr 1918 aged 31 during an attack on trenches between Vierstraat and Kemmel in Flanders. His body was discovered in Oct 1919 and he was buried in La Clytte Military cemetery in Belgium.

Harry Lissent Moss was born in Ecclesall in 1893 to James and Sarah Ann Moss of Darnall Road Sheffield. He was posted to the 7th battalion Gordon Highlanders service number 291665. He landed in France in early 1916 and was killed in action on 14 Nov 1916 aged 23 during an attack on Beaumont –Hamel. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial.

Herbert Mullaney was born in Dumfries Scotland in 1895 to James and Margaret Mullaney of 166 Middle Lane Rotherham. He enlisted in Dec 1915 to the 8th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment service number 24314 and landed in France on 27 May 1916. He was wounded in the elbow and abdomen on 1st July 1916 during the attack on Ovillers and died of his wounds on 3 Jul 1916 aged 21. He had survived for just 39 days in France. He is buried at Heilly Station cemetery.

Samuel Oakes was born in Rotherham in 1895 to Frank William and Mary Oakes of “Enville” Gilberthorpe Street Rotherham. He enlisted in the 12th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 1010 in Sept 1914 landing in Egypt in Jan 1916, received his commission to 2nd Lieutenant in the East Yorkshire regiment in Oct 1916 and transferred to “Z” Special Company the Royal Engineers in Nov 1916. He was killed in action aged 21 near Vaulx on 6th May 1917 when an ammunition column he was leading to the front line was hit by devastating German shellfire while in the process of unloading. He was one of 44 men killed. He is buried at Beaulencourt British cemetery.

Athelstan Pearson was born in Rotherham in 1884 to Frank William and Martha Pearson of 23 Oxford Street Rotherham. He enlisted into the 5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 200073 and landed in France in Apr 1915. He received a commission to 2nd Lieutenant 5th battalion Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in Dec 1916. He was killed in action on 13 June 1917 aged 32. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos memorial.

Harold Plant was born in Grimesthorpe Sheffield in 1898 to John Henry and Lucy Plant of 52 Badsley Moor Lane Rotherham. He enlisted in the West Riding regiment and was transferred to the 2nd battalion Manchester regiment service number 57964 before landing in France. He died of wounds on 4 Nov 1918 aged 20 during the attempted crossing of the Sambre-Oise canal at Ors. He is buried in Premont British cemetery.

Thomas Redfern was born in Conisbrough in 1894 to Thomas and Evelina Redfern of 20 Clifton Mount Rotherham. He enlisted in the 6th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 10706 in Aug 1914. He sailed from Liverpool on 3 Jul 1915 and landed at Suvla Bay Gallipoli on 6 Aug 1915. He was killed in action at the Battle of Scimitar Hill on 22 Aug 1915 aged 21. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles memorial.

Norman Riley was born in Scawby Brook near Brigg in 1896 to Joseph and Charlotte Ann Riley of 116 St Johns Road Eastwood Rotherham. He enlisted in 1914 and served with 10th battery 147th Brigade Royal Field Artillery service number 75833. He landed at Cape Helles Gallipoli on 25 Apr 1915 . He was killed in action on 26 May 1915 aged 19 and is buried at Lancashire Landing cemetery in Turkey.

Henry Prior Rising was born in Laughton en le Morthen in 1898 to Charles Prior and Maude Elizabeth Rising of 49 Lister Street Rotherham. He served as a Gunner with the “A” battery 298th Brigade Royal Field Artillery service number 618378 and was accidentally killed on 16 Jan 1918 aged 19. He is buried in Ruyaulcourt Military cemetery.

Cyril Shaw was born in Rotherham in 1898 to Frederick and Emily Shaw of 4 Albany Street Rotherham. He enlisted in Dec 1915 as a Gunner with 48th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery service number 117444. He landed in France in Sep 1916 and died of shell wounds to both legs at 4th casualty clearing station on 23 Jul 1917 aged 19. He is buried at Dozinghem Military cemetery.

Jack Stansfield was born in Rotherham in 1899 to James and Blanche Stansfield of “Stromness”, Oxford Street, Rotherham. He enlisted in Jan 1917 to 5th (City of London) battalion London regiment (London Rifle Brigade) service number 305863. He was mobilized in Aug 1917 and landed in France on 1st April 1918 and was posted to 1st/15th (County of London) battalion London regiment (Prince of Wales’ Own Civil Service Rifles) service number 548078. He was killed in action at the second battle of Bapaume on 22 Aug 1918 aged 19 and is buried at Bray Military cemetery. His father paid for the stained glass memorial window in St James Church Clifton.

Albert Steel was born in Warrington in 1887 to Joseph and Isabella Steel of 23 Eastwood Mount Rotherham. In Jan 1917 he enlisted in the 3rd battalion Coldstream Guards service number 21295. He was wounded in an attack on Houthoulst Forest on 9 Oct 1917 and died of his wounds at 47th casualty clearing station on 19 Oct 1917 aged 29. He is buried at Dozinghem Military cemetery.

Edward Stevenson was born in Rotherham in 1894 to Henry and Mary Ann Stevenson of 41 Neville Street Rotherham. He enlisted in Aug 1914 to the York and Lancaster regiment and was transferred to 5th battalion Connaught Rangers service number 3379 in May 1915. He landed at Anzac Cove Gallipoli on 6 Aug 1915 and was killed in action in an attack on Hill 60 on 22 Aug 1915 aged 21. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles memorial.

Arthur Slinger (Shown as Stinger on memorial) was born in Killinghall near Knaresborough in 1880 to Levi and Mary Ann Slinger. He enlisted in Sep 1914 to the 10th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 13868 and landed in France on 10 Sep 1915. He was reported missing on 1 Jul 1916 and confirmed as killed in action on 3 Jul 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial.

George Harold Stringer was born in Rotherham in 1892 to Herbert and Emily Stringer of 27 Gilberthorpe Street Rotherham. He enlisted in Dec 1915 to 8th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 21930 and landed in France on 26 May 1916. He was killed in action on 1 Jul 1916 aged 23 during the attack on Ovillers. He is buried at Blighty Valley cemetery.

Albert Clifford Swallow was born in Rotherham in 1894 to Elijah and Susannah Swallow of 19 St Johns Road Eastwood. He enlisted in Sep 1914 to the 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 2245 and landed in France on 13 Apr 1915 . He suffered gas poisoning in Dec 1915 and had the opportunity to leave the Army as a “time expired” territorial in Apr 1916. He was killed in action on 23 Sep 1916 aged 22 during a raid on German trenches near Thiepval. He is buried at Blighty Valley cemetery.

Herbert Swan was born in Rotherham in 1897 to Henry Samuel and Mary Swan of 21 Carlton Avenue Rotherham. He enlisted in Aug 1914 to the 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 1645 and landed in France on 13 Apr 1915. He transferred to the 188th company Machine Gun Corps as a Sergeant service number 54152 and was killed in action on 2 Dec 1917 aged 21. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial.

Benjamin Arthur Sykes was born in Acomb near York in 1886 to William Henry and Annie Sykes. He enlisted in the 10th (Prince of Wales Own) Royal Hussars service number 889 and was serving in India in 1908. He was discharged as “time served” in 1912. At the outbreak of the Great War he was recalled to serve and landed in Belgium on 6 Oct 1914. He was killed in action on 13 May 1915 aged 30 at Bellewaarde Ridge at the second battle of Ypres. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial to the 54,000 men missing from the Ypres salient.

John Tomlinson was born in Rotherham in 1898 to Joseph and Emma Tomlinson of 52 King Street Rotherham. He served with the 10th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 241494 and landed in France on 10 Nov 1915. He was posted as missing presumed killed in action on 28 Apr 1917 aged 18 at the Battle of Arras. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras memorial.

Clarence Trask was born in Killamarsh in 1894 to Henry and Bessie Trask of 96 Clifton Avenue Rotherham. He served with 164th Howitzer Brigade Royal Field Artillery service number 19800 and landed in France on 31 Dec 1915. He died of wounds on 18 Feb 1916 aged 22 and is buried at Warloy-Baillon communal cemetery.

George Scholey Wales was born in Barnsley in 1894 to George Edward and Grace Beatrice Wales of 8 Gilberthorpe Street Rotherham. He enlisted in the 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster regiment service number 240498 and landed in France on 13 Apr 1915. He was killed in action on 26 Mar 1918 aged 23 and is buried at Polygon Wood cemetery.

Philip Sydney Wright was born in Rotherham in 1884 to William and Susan Wright of 25 Mansfield Road Rotherham. He enlisted in Dec 1915 to the 15th battalion Durham Light Infantry service number 41056 and landed in France on 18 Jul 1917. He was posted as missing presumed killed in action near Ypres at the battle of Broodseinde on 2 Oct 1917 aged 33. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial.
