Bob Coulson Posted 26 November , 2004 Share Posted 26 November , 2004 Jon, 6th/7th/8th & 9th service battalions of the KOYLI were formed in Pontefract. Bob.
Max Posted 26 November , 2004 Share Posted 26 November , 2004 6th/7th/8th & 9th service battalions of the KOYLI were formed in Pontefract. Hello Bob The 6th Battalion may well have been formed in Pontefract because that is where the Regimental depot was. In fact the majority of the original recruits into the battalion were from the Doncaster/Thorne and Goole areas. Andy
jonclarkage3 Posted 26 November , 2004 Author Share Posted 26 November , 2004 Thanks for all the replies so far, I wondered about the KOYLI battalions because my Great GrandFather served with them but it now seems that he stayed at Pontefract for the whole of the war because he was unfit for sevice in France but had "nice handwriting" as my grandmother put it and so was employed at the depot for the whole of the war..... Micksam1967 Posted 12 March , 2006 Share Posted 12 March , 2006 Jon, Private Sam Ashton 49754. Dear Bob, I am researching my Greatgrandfather Private Sam Ashton 49754. These are the details that I know:- I have his medal card, and medal roll record. I know that he saw active service because of medals awarded. His medal roll states 5th and 12th Yorkshire Light Infantry and Reserve Z on the 17/10/1919. I know that he left home December 1917 and that he returned to No 9 Hut, Heddon Racecourse Hull,in the year 1918,also in his Brothers diary it states 3rd KOYLI, E Company at this time. Sam was discharged from Wakefield Hospital in May 1919, and went via London to Germany to join occupeing forces. I cannot work out what active service he saw,his battalion or anything else, and I have studied all the websites and had a quick look in the library at the history of the KOYLI vol 1,2,3. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Yours sincerely MickAshton
bigronhartley Posted 12 March , 2006 Share Posted 12 March , 2006 Hello Mick, The 5th YLI (later King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry) was a Territorial battalion and would have served in either the 49th West Riding Division or the 62nd West Riding Division, depending on whether is was 1/5 or 2/5. The 12th YLI was part of Kitcheners Army, it was a known as the Halifax Miners Battalion and served with the 31st Division on the first day of the Somme (1.7.1916). Hope this helps.
