There is a file at the British Library which sounds like him in Indian Army Records of Service

IOR/L/MIL/14/30478

Webber, Percy Clarence

Creation Date: 1920-1948

Contents:

Number: SS 180

Highest Rank: Acting Sergeant

Regiment: S T C

Date of commission: 26 Apr 1920

You could request a copy, subject to a fee, if you can't visit. Details in the FIBIS Fibiwiki page British Library

http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/British_Library

You could also look at some Indian Army Lists which are available online, in particular the Supplements, which contain war service. See the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Indian Army List online

http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/Indian_Army_List_online

These files are all from the Digital Library of India. I have not been able to access this site for some days, but I expect it will become available at some point.

Cheers

Maureen

Terry,

I have had a bit of a dig in the Indian Army Lists available to me and I cannot find any officer called P. C. Webber in the early 1920's and in the London Gazette, which would list his commission and promotions, I come up blank as well. Can you post a picture of the naming of the India General Service medal - that may answer a question.

Regards,

Matthew

Terry

I cant explain it - the naming looks okay but no Captain P. C. Webber can be traced, or at least I cant find him.

Named in error as Captain?

Check the file Maureen found at the British Library. You will need to go in person or find a researcher who goes (not a lot of them) or as she says order a copy (that wont be cheap IIRC).

Regards,

Matthew

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for all your help, maybe the medal was named in error?

Will look at going to the British Library later in the year.

Terry

  • 6 months later...

I have now got P.C.Webber's service records from the Bri.Lib.

Makes interesting reading, but no mention of his commission to Capt. ??

He enlisted 30-7-1917 : 2nd North Staffordshire Reg. age 34 at Wellington, Madras, India.

He was a Policeman before enlistment.

Joined S&TC 26-4-1920 : Madras.

Discharged 1-3-1923

Can't find any more info after 1923.

He does have a 1939-45 Defence Medal.
