Remembered Today:

A new ASC prefix!

Recommended Posts

I almost thought that I had found two new ASC prefixes.

The first was "GS". A search of the on-line MIC index turned up 1,608 examples. While there may be some false positives, there still are a lot of them. I am puzzled that this hasn't turned up a an ASC prefix before.

The second was "RE". My search turned up four of them. Terry checked them for me against the actual MICs and found they were transcription errors. They were really M2, R4, R4 and ES. All the letters/numbers are in about the same place on the keyboard, so the errors are understandable.

So, number 55 in my list of prefixes!

All the best,

Gary

I've had a quick search on NA and Ancestry and it would appear that what the National Archives have transcribed as an Army Service Corps GS/ prefix is actually an Army Service Corps SS/ prefix.....

Steve,

Interesting. I just purchased a 1914/15 star to the ASC that has a GS prefix. This checks out with the actual MIC. So, GS on the medal and on the MIC. My friend, Terry, is now looking for his service records on Ancestry. If he find it, I owe him a trip to Tim's :-)

All the best,

Gary

Can you give the name and number? Looking at the MICs themselves I can see why the NA transcribers thought it was GS/ (see attached) but when checked against the actual medal rolls they are all coming up as SS/.

Certainly! He is GS/23298 Pte. R. Browne, ASC. His full entitlement is a 1914/5 star trio as he entered France on 14 December 1915. He later served with the Essex Regiment and the Labour Corps. I look forward to learning what you find.

All the best,

Gary

John,

GS is a known prefix. However, none of my references have linked it to the ASC before. If it was common, I would have thought this would have been general knowledge. It has been somewhat puzzled.

Gary

I've not seen a GS prefix outside of the infantry. The ASC liked to (re)prefix anything with a pulse (and probably without) so I'm surprised they hadn't changed his GS prefix.

The odd thing is that 60037 Essex Reg. was formerly SS/3957 ASC and 60039 was formerly SS/6907.

23298, I would have thought was a very high number for an SS enlistment. I had thought that possibly they had transposed the numbers and regiments, but again, 60035 seems high. Like Craig, I have never come across GS (General Service) outside of the infantry.

Mike,

Thank you. Are ASC GS prefixes associated with any of the names?

I've done a quick search of ASC numbers, approximately 100 either side of 23298 Browne so from 23200 to 23400, and the majority of those I've found on the NA MICs are SS/ prefixed. I've been slowly matching these to the actual medal rolls and I'm finding that these are still all SS/ prefixed.

However, in this same selection there are three GS/ prefixed numbers, 23218 (William Putman), 23298 (Browne) and 23308 (Frederick Ellis). All of these were transferred out of the ASC to other units and it's my opinion that they acquired the GS/ prefix as part of this transfer, the clerk misreading SS/ for GS/. Ellis is the best example I can find of this 'confusion' as his NA MIC shows GS/ prefix, the actual MIC image is SS/ (but I can see where GS/ could be assumed) and his 1914/15 Star entry shows the 'proper' SS/ prefix. Browne and Putman however do show GS/ on all medal cards and rolls. None of these three appear to have service records that survive.

Mike,

Thank you! It does look like "SS". Interesting that he transferred to the IWT dvision of the RE.

Ellis is an M2 prefix.

It looks the GS is just because of the initial GS enlistment and someone's made an assumption at some point.

Good spot on Putnam, damned if I could find it but at least that's another that shows the SS/ prefix and not GS/. The Ellis found is a different man but his other records show the SS/ prefix so that's two out of the three, just leaves 23298 Browne as the 'odd one'.

Mike and Steve,

Good sleuthing! Browne's 1914/15 Star with a clearly stamped "GS" prefix is winging its way across to Atlantic to me. While it checks out against the MIC, I haven't gone back to the medal roll yet.

Gary

I should have posted this image earlier. I see that the resolution isn't as good as I thought it would be but it really does say "GS"!

All the best,

Gary
