BlackSeptember1918 Posted 9 February , 2016 Share Posted 9 February , 2016 Hi I bought this as a German GM17 leather gas mask . But I think it's a Belgium or French post war made item . I'll attach more pics , but the plate where the filter canister screws on has an extra hole in it which channels through to the inside of the mask , not sure if this is the ARS plate ? There's a few stamps on the mask . An M in a circle at the top of the mask , a star on a strap and an N on another strap . There's no date stamps or type stamps on the filter , just a raised stamp which looks like two letters intertwined ? I always remember that I used to think " don't get the filter wet in case there is mustard gas in it " ... Maybe it's more likely there may be Belgium chocolate gas remnants in it !! Thanks for any info you can give .

TheCorrectedEnglishModel Posted 30 January , 2019 Share Posted 30 January , 2019 That is a Belgian M18 gas mask made by Belgians (duh) in late 1918 for use in expected 1919 combat, but saw little use in ww1, good piece of you ask me, keep at all costs, as those are becoming hard to find! Chasemuseum Posted 30 January , 2019 Share Posted 30 January , 2019 Thirty years ago, these were very common, and usually found in a tin very similar to the French ARS. Inside the lid was a paper label with instructions like the ARS except that it was divided in two by a vertical line. On one side the instructions in French on the other in Flemish.
