Mike,

from the birthdate (1883) in the 1915 crew lists Evans is John Owen Evans.

His UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927

are in Ancestry

Name Birth Date Birth Place Issue Date Certificate Number

John Owen Evans 1883 New Quay, Cardiganshire 7 Feb 1906 039471

John Owen Evans 1883 New Quay, Cardiganshire 4 Sep 1907 039471

John Owen Evans 1883 New Quay, Cardiganshire 3 Apr 1909 039471

And looking through them, he survived!!

He lost his Certificate also, which was a Certificate of Competency as Master.

That is brilliant, and advances my knowledge further. The burning question then is, if he survived, was he captured or not. I have already been through IRC records and found nothing. That however does not prove anything either way, because there seem to be several known captives that don't appear. If I was going to guess, I would say that he got away, because of the U-Boat prisoner headcount.

If I am really really lucky he might just have left an account in those ADM documents.

Regards,

Mike

I checked findmypast(fmp) merchant seamen records to see if David L Jenkins and John Owen Evans were active in the 1918-21 period.

I found the following CR10 cards which I reckon are a good match and also contain a good photo of the seaman

David Lambert Jenkins, RS2 No 13760, Discharge no 923015, 1st mate cert no 009441

2nd mate. born 30 July 1895 Llanon, Wales.

1 voyage start shown.

John Owen Evans, RS2 No 21103, oc cert no 039471

master, born 29 March 1883 Newquay.

nok Mrs M J Evans (wife), Islwyn, Llanon, Wales

4 voyage starts shown.

The photos for the two men appear to have been taken by the same photographer and I suspect that they were taken in Cardiff.

I couldn't find either man on the pow website

hope this helps

best wishes

It helps a lot - and many thanks for finding that. A new piece of evidence has emerged from a friend today. The paperwork for Evans' replacement Certificate. Rather tellingly it is dated August 1917. I reckon that is conclusive proof that he not only survived but was not captured.

Hopefully the full story will emerge from those ADM papers. I will be watching the letter box every morning now!

Regards,

Mike

Hi

I appreciate this is now a rather old thread but I was wondering if anyone had come across any further info, particularly for the King David. I'm researching my wife's grandfather who I believe was on board when it was sunk.

Thanks

John
