"HANS WOERMAN" GERMAN PRIZE SHIP.

The words above are entered in the ships/regiments column of the Liverpool Town Hall Roll of Honour. The name and rank in the first column are:

PETTIPON, BOS'N A.

There are some all-knowing people here, so I am hoping that someone might be able to tell me more about the bos'n. He is not on CWGC. I have seen a few items about the ship, via Google.

No hits on the various Ratings databases for RN/RNVR/RNR for this name at all.

This ship was named thus ( HANS WOERMANN) from 1900 to 1914 when it was captured by HMS Cumberland and re-named s s Gold Coast under the new ownership of Elder Line, running from UK to West Africa.

It was torpedoed off Kinsale, Ireland, on 19 April 1917.

There may be a Prize account in Kew records, (ADM 238 series) where I might expect to see your man Pettipon's cut of the salvage money.I have seen such things before for other WW1 acquisitions.
