Khaki Posted 12 February , 2016 Author Share Posted 12 February , 2016 I always thought that last one was more of a Hungarian award. The 2 empires were separated by the date of issue. Thanks for sponsoring these quiz Khaki. I have a Gallipoli medal that says replica on the reverse. A shame it was never issued as it was most assuredly earned. I have always thought of it as Austro Hungarian based on the crown & coat of arms, and double checking on other sites seems to support this, but just because I have the medal doesn't mean I am right. I welcome any additional information. thanks khaki
Khaki Posted 12 February , 2016 Author Share Posted 12 February , 2016 I have a Gallipoli medal that says replica on the reverse. A shame it was never issued as it was most assuredly earned. I totally agree that it is a shame that it was never issued, even in later years (1960's) when ANZAC (Gallipoli) veterans were petitioning their Governments for some formal recognition. I note that your medal has replica on the reverse, does that mean it was a further production run, perhaps by a different manufacturer? Can you post a photo of your medal for comparison? Does anyone else have any data on later production? thanks khaki

I didn't think I would puzzle you gents on here for long, but they are unusual. I quite like the design too, with the arms of London at the top. Knotty Posted 16 February , 2016 Share Posted 16 February , 2016 Morning gents Both of you know your medals, spot on. The particular one shown was awarded to Pte James Collins 14th Field Ambulance 11/11/1917, I am perplexed as to why he received such award and not a "conventional" medal. Had a good search and found the answer, stood on a grenade, refused amputation, became professional footballer. John
The Inspector Posted 16 February , 2016 Share Posted 16 February , 2016 Hi John He was escorting a "lunatic" soldier through the trenches when he pulled the pin, Collins stood on the grenade and saved the lives of two of his colleagues. The "lunatic soldier" was killed. He refused to have his leg amputated had 14 ops, was a footballer and captained Swansea, played with them for 15 yrs. Medal sold at auction £21600. Photo of him and his mum in front of Buckingham Palace after presentation by King George, on line. Daily Mirror 28.4.14. Regards Barry

The Inspector Posted 16 February , 2016 Share Posted 16 February , 2016 Hi Khaki I know, but there were two types. The one above (Obverse) won't have much on the reverse. Should have a number at the bottom. A bit missing? Regards Barry
Khaki Posted 16 February , 2016 Author Share Posted 16 February , 2016 Hi Barry, No, the medal itself is complete, the only thing that is not shown is at the top of the ribbon is a rectangular name brooch/fastener. A rather sad and poignant medal of the great war. The second type that you refer to is one that, from memory, shows a ship on the obverse. I do not have that medal, but I think I prefer the design of the one shown. khaki
