Would anyone have access to the War Diary of the 1st/5th Highland Light Infantry for 1917? I am particularly interested in any mention of Temp. Capt. Lewis MacLellan. He was killed in action 30th November 1917 and won an MC at some point prior to this date. Would like to obtain details about these two events. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

He was awarded his MC as the result of his actions on 8th/9th November 1917 at what appears to read "Waci Hesy" (- Wadi [el] Hesi). Gazetted 26th March 1918, with the "deed" being published in the London Gazette of 24th August 1918.

Sorry I can't help with the war diary.

Regards

Chris

EDIT:

From The Fifth Battalion Highland Light Infantry in the War 1914-1918, by F.L. Morrison

"...On the left, Bloody Post, a little in advance of the sangar, took its toll of the defenders. Captain Campbell was hit, Lieut. M'Lellan was killed instantaneously by a bullet..."

The book does expand on the events of 8th/9th, and 30th November 1917.
