manxman Posted 24 November , 2004 Share Posted 24 November , 2004 Thomas Ambrose COWLEY, one of my Great Grandfathers was a seaman form Peel, Isle of Man. The 1901 census shows him to be an 18yr old fisherman on the "Western Maid", out of Peel. During WW2 he worked on salvage ships on the Mersey. WW2 merchant marine medal rolls are on line and I have found that he was awarded the39/45 (star or medal) and the war medal. There is no trace of him on army mics. I suspect that he either a) remained fishing and was exempted b)in the merchant marine c)joined the RN or RNR what records exist and what can I hope to learn from them? ta
manxman Posted 25 March , 2005 Author Share Posted 25 March , 2005 bringing this back to the top. Where would I go to ascertain whether he served with the RN, RNR or Merchant marine in WW1?
