James Sutherland, MICE. DSO London Gazette 1.2.1917. Son of Mackay Forbes Sutherland and Elizabeth. Educated Coopers Hill; joined Indian Public Works Department 1888. Volunteered for active service august 1914. Lt Colonel RE; served with the East African Expeditionary Force  October 1914 - March 1918 and then in Mesopotamia until the end of the war.

 

The records of the Institute of Civil Engineers shows him as Deputy Director Railways, East African Expeditionary Force.

Does anyone know what batallions of the South African NativeLabour corps was in the area at the time? I have just found out I will be in London next week and want to visit the archives in Kew to see what I can unearth.
