Raster Scanning Posted 24 November , 2004 Share Posted 24 November , 2004 I have obtained the medals and plaque to the above man. He served in the Bedfordshire Rgt and from his number (200796) in one of the 5th Battalions. He was Killed in action on 6-12-1917 while serving as a Pte in the 2/7th (Robin Hood Battalion) Sherwood Foresters. I would be grateful for the SDGW info on this man as well as any info on what his battalion was doing at the time of his death. CWGC lists his father as living in Dunstable, Beds. Many thanks. John. Greenwoodman Posted 24 November , 2004 Share Posted 24 November , 2004 2nd/7th Sherwoods were with 178th Bde, 59th Div, landed in France, 26/02/17. 06/02/18 aborbed by 1st/7th Sherwoods and became 7th Sherwoods remained with 59th Div.. The division was involved in the Cambrai attack, and has the battle honour for the German Counter-attacks, 30/11/17 - 03/12/17. Best I can do John. 59th does have a div history, but its not very common. I have extracts, but they start in April 1918. There is also a battalion history for the Robin Hoods: Officers of the Battalion. “The Robin Hoods” 1/7th, 2/7th & 3/7th Battns. Sherwood Foresters 1914-1918, (Nottingham: J & H Bell Ltd., 1921). Bradbridge, E. U. (Ed). Record of the 59th Division, 1915 - 1918 (North Midland), (Chesterfield, Derbys: Edmunds, 1928).

steve fuller Posted 24 November , 2004 Share Posted 24 November , 2004 Hi John Not your man, but with your rather large database, wondered if by some long shot this is a relative of his? Unsure but I believe Chris Collier sent me this one ... CARTER, HERBERT BRUCE, Private 3005. 1/5th Bedfordshire Regmnt KIA 15th August 1915 Born & enlisted Clifton. Resided Shefford BTW, have drawn a blank so far on Cpl Bonham. Will keep looking though.
bedfordyeoman Posted 25 November , 2004 Share Posted 25 November , 2004 J, National Roll vol.5 has following entry: "Carter VR, Private, Sherwood Foresters He volunteered in May 1915 and in January 1917 was drafted to the Western Front where he took part in the Battles of Arras, Bullecourt and Ypres. He was killed in action in November 1917 and was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals. 1 Garden Road, Dunstable" The address and unit are also confirmed by the Dunstable Directory of 1916. None of my sources suggest that there were any other Carters at the same address serving in the forces but a census entry and further checks may confirm. All the best David
Raster Scanning Posted 21 December , 2004 Author Share Posted 21 December , 2004 Hi David. Many thanks for your additional info. I have all the NRGW vols but this one is at my home in the UK. I was not aware he was listed. This information is much appreciated. I am sorry for the late reply as I have been away on holiday for some time. All the best. Steve. Thanks for the info on the other Carter, when I start my research properly I will look into possible links between the two men. Cheers. John. Stephen Nulty Posted 21 December , 2004 Share Posted 21 December , 2004 Not sure if its any help, but on the 1901 census, Victor is aged 3 and lives at 1 Garden Road, Dunstable with his father Arthur (30) and mother Stella (28). On the CWGC they are recorded as living at 45 Garden Road, so they must have moved in the interim. Also in 1901, Herbert Bruce Carter is 4 years old. He is the son of Moses (44) and Elizabeth (42) and lives at “Little Clifton”, Clifton, Beds. I have looked back at the 1891, 1881 and 1871 census information and can find no link between the families. Steve
