I discuss this incident in one of my courses as it leads on to perhaps why the Ottoman authorities were rather reluctant to give him a permit to work on Crete when he first got there. As a more serious aside, the practice of espionage by travellers and "adventurers" seems not to have been quite as despised by the British, when practised by, rather than on, them.
