Bob Coulson Posted 11 May , 2003 Share Posted 11 May , 2003 Chris, Checked "Green Howards in the Great War" and he is listed as commanding the 3rd battalion but they did'nt leave the UK, serving at Hartlepool as part of the Tees Garrison. Soldiers Died CD gives him as "died" as opposed to KIA or DOW and lists him not as Yorks Regt but as Special Lists - New Armies. My best guess and it is only a guess is that he was seconded to some sort of "staff" job during 3rd Ypres and died as a result of accident or natural causes. Bob. Chris Noble Posted 11 May , 2003 Author Share Posted 11 May , 2003 Cheers Bob. Just a bit confused after that! Trying to research the local war memorial, that was the original reason for the question. Date of death is given as 46 years of age. Chris. Jock Bruce Posted 13 May , 2003 Share Posted 13 May , 2003 Local worthy, Special Reserve commission pre-war, commands 3rd Bn at some point then to France to a staff job when overage. London Gazette Supplement of 22 Jun 17 lists him, with several other old stagers under Special Appointments (Graded for purposes of pay as Staff Lts., 1st Cl.):- Lt.-Col. Sir R. B. N. Gunter, Bt., ret., York. R., Spec. Res., and to be temp. Lt.- Col. whilst so empld. There may be other references if you want to hammer the on-line gazette. I would have thought someone of this social prominence would be reasonably easy to trace in the local papers of the period. 'BT' are not initials but post-nominal 'Bt' = Baronet, seems to a glitch by CWGC, which also treats 'Sir' as a forename in the search engine.
