CeredigionArchives Posted 23 May , 2016 Author Share Posted 23 May , 2016 This time, a short post from our main blog page, written by Dr. Lynn Bruce. We had funding for a one month project post to help source additional material for the WW1 blog from our collections. We were very lucky to get someone of Lynn's calibre to do the work. She has now gone back to Scotland but she blogged about her experience first! https://archifdyceredigionarchives.wordpress.com/2016/05/23/from-unexpected-places-new-sources-for-our-great-war-in-cardiganshire-blog/ Ania Ceredigion Archives
CeredigionArchives Posted 13 June , 2016 Author Share Posted 13 June , 2016 Sorry we're late with the updates! So much to do, so little time, so few staff... Lynn, out project worker, has gone back to Scotland but has left lots of scanned images for the future editions of the blog. Here are the links to weeks 95 and 96: https://ww1ceredigion.wordpress.com/2016/05/26/wythnosweek-9526maimay-1mehefinjune1916/ https://ww1ceredigion.wordpress.com/2016/06/10/wythnosweek962-8mehefinjune1916/ And, now also added to week 15 of the blog, a newly-found memorial card with photo of Thomas Lemuel Jones of Ystumtuen: https://www.facebook.com/archifdyceredigionarchives/photos/a.887053807995974.1073741828.840672105967478/1226868047347880/?type=3&theatre More soon! Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 13 June , 2016 Share Posted 13 June , 2016 Diolch Ania, It will be interesting to hear if the stormy sessions at Cardigan Tribunals settled down following the departure of the said Lieutenant!
Aneurin Posted 13 June , 2016 Share Posted 13 June , 2016 Thanks again, Ania, always interesting to read. Incidentally, Thomas Lemuel Jones was a constable in the Cardiff City Police. He enlisted in Bridgend and served as a private in the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards. He is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial and the Cardiff City Police war memorial plaque in Cardiff Bay Police Station. He was unmarried. CeredigionArchives Posted 13 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 13 July , 2016 https://ww1ceredigion.wordpress.com/2016/07/06/wythnosweek-101-7-13-gorffennafjuly-1916/ Week 101, and the Somme begins. No benefit of hindsight for those left at home at the time; they couldn't know that it was the start of the greatest slaughter of the war. 'News from the Somme came home to Cardiganshire gradually – and printed reports had to wait till the following week’s copies of The Cambrian News and Cardigan and Tivy-side Advertiser. Mametz Wood was the location the newspapers singled out. It was the objective of the 38th Welsh Division in the first battle of the Somme, and the losses from Cardiganshire were the heaviest of the war to date.'
