ddycher Posted 16 December , 2015 Share Posted 16 December , 2015 All I have been reading the court of enquiry transcripts on events at Nazlet el-Shobak on the 30th March 1919. Here the 1/5th SLI executed the local Sheikh and four notables, without trial, for damaging the local railway line and attacking british troops. Not an incident I had heard of before and one that reflects poorly on some of the officers I had tracked through the Palestine campaign with the 75th Division. Anyone heard of this previously / have any views ? Regards Dave
GraemeClarke Posted 16 December , 2015 Share Posted 16 December , 2015 Morning, Not the only incident by all accounts https://archive.org/details/egyptiandelegati00pari Regards, Graeme
ddycher Posted 16 December , 2015 Author Share Posted 16 December , 2015 Thanks Graeme I had a similar ref. It makes for disturbing reading, although undoubtedly from a biased perspective. That said British military authorities were damning on the behaviours of officers involved. Still trying to read between the lines and understand what actually happened. All previous ref's I have painted Urwick in a positive light. That said Palin recommended his removal from command due to this event. ddycher Posted 22 December , 2015 Author Share Posted 22 December , 2015 All Seems to have been more wide spread that I had thought. Going back on other unit ref's I have from the 75th Division I found a similar incident with the 3/3rd Gurkha's at Abu Akdar after the murder of one of their sentries on the 24th March. This resulted in the village of Shabnath being demolished. Typically I had not finished tracing the 75th Div units through 1919. Need to go back and look at them again. Anybody seen other examples ? ddycher Posted 28 December , 2015 Author Share Posted 28 December , 2015 Thanks Steve Had seen ref's to that in the past. The on the spot decisions made wrt martial law and law and order very different to our modern day interpretations. Starting to get a more holistic view on events during the March / April uprising. Previously I had only focused on Huddleston's column. Opening it out across the 75th Div is proving interesting. Regards Dave
