Lieutenant Stanley Charles Howard WILLIAMS - The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment)

S.C.H. WILLIAMS was born in Victoria, Australia, in 1893

He enlisted as a corporal in Sydney, NSW, 7 Nov 1916, 13th Bn 1st Reinf. service # 1425

(He is one of 149 men listed on the WW1 Honor Roll that we are researching).

His war service record shows that he accepted a commission in the 15th Reserve Bn, Royal Fusiliers on 27 December 1915 in London.

On 14 October 1918 he died of influenza, Zaria, Nigeria, West Africa and is buried in the Zaria European Cemetery with his grave marked with a 'white wooden cross in a concrete base'.

A marble plaque is also in the St John's Uniting Church, Neutral Bay (Sydney) which reads

23rd Royal Fusiliers (formerly of 13th Batt. A.I.F.)

who died 14th October 1918

at Zaria, Nigeria, West Africa

Aged 24

He fought for righteousness

Gallipoli (Anzac landing) France, German East Africa

1914 - 1918

I think you may struggle with online sites for background information on Lieutenant Williams but you never know, someone may have a recommendation or two.

His personnel file is held at the National Archives, it's not digitized so not available online, and a personal visit (by you or someone on your behalf) or a request for a copy of it will need to be made.
It's held there under the following reference; WO 339/51605 - Lieutenant Stanley Charles Howard WILLIAMS, The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) attached Nigeria Regiment.

There are a few London Gazette entries that I've been able to find, links are attached....

He was entitled to the British War & Victory Medals and these were issued off of the Royal Fusiliers Officers' Medal Roll, (NA Ref. WO329/2189) as a Lieutenant with no additional information other than he died on 14/10/1918.

The Nigeria Regiment (W.A.F.F.) Medal Roll (NA Ref. WO329/2331) for the 1st Nigerian Regiment does also list him as being on the General List and with service with that battalion in 5a (East Africa) from 8th September 1917 to 21st March 1918, his date of death on that roll is a day different, being given as 15/10/1918.

A silver cigarette case, which once belonged to Lieutenant Stanley Charles Howard Williams, was sold today via eBay. Somehow it had found its way to the Netherlands...
