But... when do you look in those books? Sometimes, when you need an information. Do you read all the books? A lot of them a similar to the others. I have been idly looking through some of the material recently for something else and it does look (A) like a cataloguers nightmare, and (b) a historians dream! I took at random some of these ones, e.g., shell expenditure at Verdun, and wow, what a lot of material there is to be used there! Well, many years ago I chose the Roman army for my Ph.D and later research - but boy oh boy, what a wealth of data for an inquiring researcher! However it's clear the vast majority are pre-WWI, and they mostly date from the19th century.
