Remembered Today:

Upload your transcriptions to Archive.org (Internet Archive)

I recently was looking at at an online book on Archive.org (Internet Archive) called

''Memoirs of the Great War'' by James Racine c 1920. The author was an officer with the 2/5th Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment

https://archive.org/details/memogw

This was not a book published in the 1920s , but a recent transcription of his diary by his grandson, uploaded to Archive.org in 2014.

The descriptive page for the book file says

This is a rare book only available online and at the Imperial War Museum in London.”

The third page of the book file says “This book was originally written by James Racine. Edited, restored and converted to digital format by… “

I think this is the first time I have come across a transcription like this on Archive.org. Perhaps others may find Archive.org a convenient place to post a transcription , or other work, diaries included, if the aim is to make the work freely available. This seems an easier alternative than setting up and maintaining a website as some do.

From my point of view as a user, Archive.org is great. You can easily read books online, or download in several formats.

For more information,

https://archive.org/details/texts&tab=about

https://archive.org/about/faqs.php Select "Uploading Content" which advises "As an archive our intention is to store and make materials in perpetuity".

Cheers

That's a cracking book. He also served with the 1/5th Seaforth Highlanders and there's some really interesting information on their time at Bedford. One of the few accounts I have read of this period.

Further to my initial post, you can specifically upload to the Community Texts category.

This is not a difficult process.  As part of the process, you need to register (if not already registered), but can use any user name you choose, but you do need to have a “good” internet speed for the upload to take place.  I believe the standard upload is in the form of a pdf,   but “Most typical formats are acceptable”.

The internet Archive page “Community Texts”  has a section “Click here to contribute your book!”

https://archive.org/details/opensource&tab=about

As part of this process you will need to add, or amend auto fill-in details, such as book title, author, year of publication, and there is an optional section for comments, and other optional sections such as licence.

Cheers
