rolt968 Posted 22 July , 2015 Share Posted 22 July , 2015 Why did the Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade consist of 4 regiments from the princely states and no British regiment, while Indian Army brigades consisted of three Indian regiments (or battalions if infantry) and one British regiment/battalion? Was it part of the agreement to accept the troops of princely states, perhaps? RM
Ron Clifton Posted 22 July , 2015 Share Posted 22 July , 2015 Hello RM That is probably the reason, although it is possible that no British cavalry regiment could be spared for the role. It might also have had something to do with being able to appoint an Indian as brigade commander - if indeed that was the case. Ron
KizmeRD Posted 23 July , 2015 Share Posted 23 July , 2015 One has to recognize the legal and constitutional niceties, and be aware of the fact that the Princely States were nominally sovereign entities of India during the British Raj (i.e. not officially governed by the British). Their troops were in effect independent allies commanded entirely by Indian officers. In contrast, British Indian Army units had British officers serving in all senior positions, with the native Viceroy commissioned officers only occupying junior command positions.
