Remembered Today:

Oldham Rugby League players KIA WW1

Recommended Posts

Like so many of the Bristish sport clubs, the men of Oldham Rugby League, or ‘Northern Union’, Club as it was then known, joined up in vast numbers to answer the ‘call’ in the First World War.

In all over 40 of the current players and officials would “join up” between 1914 and 1918 as well as many who had once played for the club.

Eleven were destined to ‘fall’ during the conflict including 3 Scots, two of whom were brothers, 2 Welshmen, a West country man and a Cumbrian, along with the local lads from Oldham and Manchester.

The experience of these individuals varied greatly; Nanson and Thomas were internationals whereas, Scott and Mills only played a handful of matches between them. However, all of them swapped the red and white hoops for the khaki.

Although I have collected some information and imagery relevent to the players listed below, any extra help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Simon - The microfilm copies of the Oldham Chronicle at the local reference library are my main source for the information.

We also had another evening paper at that time, the Oldham Standard, the copies of which are also proving to be very useful

Further to my previous posts, it appears that W.M.B (Bill) Nanson is remembered on the Helles Memorial in Turkey, Panel 158 - 170.

If anyone has a photo it would be most appreciated.

Thanks Bugle - One of our lads, (Jim Finnerty) was in the South Lancs but I'm not sure which Battalion.

He received the Military Medal. However, he was a Widnes lad so maybe not with the 5th.

Many thanks Michelle. I have recently been contacted by someone who is researching "Hawickandthewar".

Hawick was Danny Shannon's home town. I am sure they too will be interested in this image.

Different shaped ball (mine's the round variety), but if I ever come across any reference to the club during my many hours per week spent trawling through the sports archives, I'll let you know.

Just found out that the name of Phillip Thomas (Yorkshire Hussars Yeomanry) mentioned at the top of this topic is noted on panel 5 at The Menin Gate memorial.

If anyone is planning a visit an image would be most appreciated. Thanks.
