Can anyone enlighten me as to how this "trap" differed from how barbed wire entanglements were constructed until then ordinarily?

Apparently it was developed by a Pte Death of the Suffolk Regiment in 1915 and was introduced to other battalions while resting at La Clytte.

I'm Currently reading 4th Middlesex War Diaries and the Pioneers were instructing them in early March 1915 at La Clytte on how to construct what looks to me like an exceptionally big, evil pile of barbed wire.

Any death trap experts around?!
